ruly wonderful. The idea of a man
living a rock weighing a thousand

successful in collecting claims against the
Government. , He has .facilities for the
irompt prosecution and collection of

.The Evacuation of KaehyilloT
Mr Charles 'ir. Green. Vrillng from
Washington states that our' informant
was in error in saying fbat Gen. Neglay

''I have very reliable information that
Gen. 13uell, at the time ho was etscuating
tho country south of Nashville and mov
ing north with his army, considered it
contrary to all rules of war and military
tactics to hold a city like Nashville, ivitU
all communication cut off from it; and
that he would have etScnated it had' it
not been for Gov. Johnson, who insisted
on holding it. Geh. Negley kt that time
did not have command of the city, and I
am certain that he never has had ever) a
thought of evacuating the. city since he
has been in command there. . It is, also,
a mistake about my being a bearet of
"important official dispatches." I brought
through private letters to the parties
named, but no olllcial dispatches; and
the lady who came through with me was
my wife. ('in. Commrrcial, . .

A friend vouches for the truth of the
following: "Soon after the battle of
Antictam, a paroled rebel prisoner woun
ded in that battle, and calling himself
Col. Treston of Louisiana, appeared in
Baltimore. A name of. such distinction
procured him attention at. once, and he
was immediately taken into his family
by Col. r k, au old rctideut and a
warm sympathiser .witn tuo rebels.
Col. Preston was treated with most dis
tinguished considerations, his wounds
carefully attended to, and, all his wants
generously supplied. Indeed he was
greatly lionizeu, mtrotluceu to tne duo,
the envy of the men and idol of all the
6ecesh ladies. , After, the lapse of a few
weeks, Col. I k, one uay, learned
that a Mr. C, a relative" of his distin
guished guest, had arrived in tho city.
Lie informed Col. Preston, who expressed
grrat joy at the intelligence, and begged
his host at once to invite -Mr. Ii. to bis
house. This was dono the same day,
and upon his arrival, Col. Preston, in his
chamber, was informed by the servant
of the fact."I will make my toilet im
mediately," said tho colonel, "and wait
upon JIr.. B"i Put a long timo elapsed,
longer than' Col. T- -k-' thought the
most elaborate toilet required, and the
gallant Preston did not appear. The
servant was dispaeched for him again,
when it was discovered that the chiv
alrous southerner had slipped off, taking
as 6ouvcnirs of his visit. Col. P k's
gold-headedi cane, and lady P- r-k's
diamond ring! Of course, inquiries as
to tho Preston were pushed, and it was
soon ascertained that he was no Preston
at all, but a New Orleans barber, who
had civen his entertainer certainly a
close shave." : ' ;
