While the rebel army occupied Ken

citizen gave information which led to the
seizure of several hundred dollars' worth
of bacon belonging to a Union man, the
rebel army taking the meat and paying
for it in (.onledt-ratc scrip. Ihe rebel
citizen, a day or two ogo learning be was
likely to be called to account for his
conduct, and not liking to answer in his
own neighborhood came to this city and
reported to the l'rovost -Marshal General.
lcing asked what he had been doing, he
replied, nothing. Thereupon the charge
was read to him, and as lie could make
no satisfactory denial, the Marshal gave
him a writing, substantially as follows:
"You will return to Washington Coun

current funds, tho value of his bacon at
the time it was taken from him and
this will entitle you to Confederate notes
ho may have received for the same. When
you have settled with him, you will re
port yourself at this ofllce to take the
oath, give bond, and be discharged."
lhis policy will be pursued in similar
cases hereafter in Kentucky.

Gen. Samner Demands the Surrender

Large Force of Guerrillas at Aquia

New York Money Market, &c. !
UfiAucju Admits Anur of Potomac, Nov.
22. 'Last night was spent by the rebels
removing the inhabitants from Freder
icksburg, and throwing up earthworks.
Deemed injudicious to open on Ihe city
to-day.
Our encampments, w hich were in range
of the enemy's guns, have been removed
further back from tho river. The rebels
lired a few shots, to which we made no
response. '
General Sumner demanded the sur
render of Fredericksburg yesterday.
White's rebel guerrillas, twenty-five
hundred strong, appeared in the vicinity
of Leesburg.
At Aquia Creek a number of guerrillas
were seen last night, their intention ap
peared to bo to murder and plunder.
New York, Nov. 2-1. Gold 30.
News unimportant.
Gkkkraju8 Clemency. GefTrard, the
President of Hayli, is known for his
clemency. Put this clemency is not the
careless act of a man with whom every
thing has gone well. On the contrary,
GellVard's heart has been wrung by the
keenest woes that can try a man, all in
direct connection with the exercise of his
power. His only son, a youth of eighteen,
died of exhaustion and fatigue, brought
on by his exertions in that blessed and
well-nigh bloodless revolution which
carried his father to the Presidency. His
eldest daughter died in childbirth from
anxiety for her father. His youngest
daughter became the victim of one of tho
most dastardly murders recorded in his
tory. Yet nothing of all this has availed
to sour or freezexthe man's long sullering
generosity. A general officer in atten
dance upon him resolved to murder him,
and Gell'rard knew of it. Takiug with
him the would-be assassin, he went to
tho cemetery, at the gate of which he
left two ' guides" who had accompanied
him, and proceeded to the son's grave.
Having reached it, he turned to his com
panion and said, ' I know you carry pis
tols to shoot mo on tho first opportunity ;
do it here. Let mo fall on tho grave of
my son. Do yon hesitate V" he proceed
ed alter a moment, "take my pistols if
your own fail you." The spirit of the
assassin was disarmed; he was forgiven
and retained his rank.
It is said that the depredations com
milted by Gen. Chant's army, in its
march to Holly Springs, were committed
by loyal Tcnnesseans who have enlisted,
and took this opportunity to avenge their
wrongs. They were careful to bura only
tho houses and barns of notorious rebels.
