Tbo following prayer, applicable to the present time, was formerly used in th 'Trnner, or Book of Private Devotions," in the Reformed church until the accession of IJueeu Mary of Eng land. It is reproduced now in tbe hope that it may be adopted once more in our churches, of all denominations, at least for a year or two. It would awaken hopes in tens of thousands of anxious minds, and perhapa prove instrumental iu reviving sentiments of moderation and humanity in of landlords. Easter Sunday. To-day is Lister Sunday, and we take from the New American Cyclopedia the fol lowing abridged account of the Easter fct tival: The Engliah name Eaater and the German Osicrn have been supposed by tome writers to have been derived from the name of the feast of the Teutonic Gaddes Ostera (the Goddes of Spring), which wat celebra ted by tbe ancient Saxon in the spring, and for which the early missionaries sub stituted the Christian festival. According to Adelung, both th English ani the Ger man words are derived from the oli Saxon word osier, osten, which eigniSes rising, be cause nature arise anew in the spring. According to the Mosaic law, the Passover among the Jews was celebrated on the 14th day of the month Abib, afterward called Niaan, that is, within a day or two before or after the vernal equinox. Th early Chris tiant differed in regard to the time of cele braling Easter. Tne churches in the AVeit taught, at they declared, by St. Philip and St, Paul, observed th nearest Sjtudsy to the full moon of Niaan, without taking ac count of the day on which the Passover was celebrated. The Asiatic churches, on the other hand, in accordance a they said, with the tradition derived from St. John, fol lowed by the Jewish calcndar, and adopting the 14th of Nisan as the day of the eru eifixioo, celebrated the festival of Easter on the 3d day following, whatever day of th week that might he. rrom this circum stance they were called Quartodeeimaus. The dispute, on this point in process of time became serious, and neither aide wss able to convince or convert the other. The yen erable Polycarp, bishop of Smyrna, wen to IUiine. A. D. 15s. and had a conference ith Anicetua on this subject. Forty year later, Victor, bishep of Rome, was appealed to, and wat ve-y peremptory in requiring the Asiatic bishops to conform to the rule of the western church. This they refused to do, and Polycrates of Ephesus, in behalf of hi brother bishops, tent Victor word that they had resolved to maintain th cus torn which they had received from their father. Victor then went to far as to bresk off communication with the eastern church es, for which he wa rebuked by St. Irenteus of Lyon. After thi the contending par tie agreed to maintain their respective cus torn and practice on this subject, with out censuring one another. Saving oc casional disputes, matters continued in thi state until the time of Con- stantine, who had tbe subject brought be fore the council of Nice (A. D. 325.) The question was fuJy discussed, aud finally settled for the whole church by adopting the rule which makes Easter-day to be al ways the first Sunday after the lull moon which happens upon or next bfter March 21; and if the full moon happen on i Sunday, Easter-day is the Sunday after. By thit arrangement, Easter may come as early at March 22, or at late at April 25 This sacred festival has been termed the queen of festivals; it has been observed from the very beginning, and it it celebrated in every part of the Christian world with great o!emnity and devotion. Th primi tive Christians very early on tbe morning of Esster saluted each other with the words, Christ i risen," to which the response wss made , "Uhr.Bl is risen inaeea, ana hath appeared to Simon." The Greek hurch still retains this custom. In nearly all Christian countries the recur rence of Easter has been celebrated ith various ccremonie, popular sports, and tuperstitiont. Among the best nown is the Enelish custom of making presentt of colored eggs, called uche or paste eggs, which were often lahorately ornamented, and in a royal roll f the time of Edward I., preserved in the tower, appears an entry of lSd for 400 eggs to be used for this purpose. Colored eggs were used by children at Eajtcr in a sort of sme which consists in testing the strength of the egg-shells, and this practice is re tained in many places in England and the uited States. In tome partt of Ireland the legend it current that the tun dances n the tky on Easter Sunday morning. Thu as once a prevailing superstition m Eng- ind also, which Sir Thomas Browne, the uthor of "Inquiry into Vulgar Errors," thought it not superfluous to declare un founded. The game of ball was a iavorite aster sport, in which municipal corpora- ous formerly engaged with due parade and gnity ; and at Bury St. Edmund s within few 'veara the game was kept up with rest spirit by 12 old women, in vue ortheru couuliet of England on Easter unday the men parade Ihe streets and laim the privilege of lifting every woman three times from the ground, receiving in ayment a kiss or a silver sixpence. Th same is none oy uc women m "j" tbe next day. In a rart of Oxfordshire, af er evening service on Easier Sunday, men and women used, as late a liZ.', to turow great quantities of spples into the church- ard, aud those who had been married du ne tho year threw three times as many as the rest ; after which all want to the minis- er's house aud feasted on bresd, cheese, nd ale. A less innocent custom once pre vailed in France or stoning Jeas at mm . -, i : v. : - ii T I : t ... yif season; and jjuiauro m . Fari " tells us that Almeric, viscount da Rochechouard, having visited Toulouse at faster, the chapter of St. Etieune appoint ed his chaplain Huguc to beat a Jew in his honor, an ollic which was performed o zealously that the vic.nn expired on tne pot. In England it was common for tbe boyt to run about tho streets on Easter morning crying : Ch'ist i' nsn, Christ is risen, AU the Jcr mum no to pruou. To mark tbeir abhorvnee of Jews, the Eng- ibh. used also to make a point of eating ba con on this festival, but with it they had Unsy pudding, a relic of th bitter herb of the paasover.
