The poor creatures have tent petitions to the body which four week ago they termel a "mob of wretches who otizht to be iu hell or the penitentiary;" styling them "Your Koly," etc.. and at jertly beirg'iig that the "Metropolitan l'oio-e iSi'll" may be averted, at.d tha.1 they may not be delivered over to the tender mercies of the despot lirownlow. hut ell to no purpise. 1 bese people un ders'iiud tha rebels, and know lmw to d-al rightly with them ! It i? aimoHt impossible to conceive cf a viler blunder than this, ujton the jteoj.le, and city government of Nash vide. Even the Free; men' Bureau commends, public ly and privately, the conduct of our city authorities ; and three of the Marshals, under the old city administration, ere upon the present force a fact which shows how utterly tho present city government ignores polities in the selection of men fr the po lice force. The writer says ho has been in many jaile; he need not have volunteered that btatement there is no man will dispute that assertion; and we have no doubt but it is the Crbt truth the writer haa told iu ten years. f inco writing the above we have received the following card, which we cheerfully publish: To th Kiiitorcf the Union: The Press and Times of yesterday con tained a letter taken from the Chicago Post, and dated at Washington, May 14, in which the (My Marshals of Nashville are vilified and slandered in the moht outrageous Wan ner. We have few words to waste on such a innti as this writer, who fears to let his name bo known; we have only to (ay that he is a vile slitndcrer, liar, and coward; and tho editor of the paper which copied it, knowing the .statements to bo glanderous, is eijualiy a villain.
