World's Greatest Cataract.
What is set down as the greatest
cataract in the world is on the Isruazu
river, which partly separates Brazil
and Argentina. The precipice over
which the river plunges is 2i0 feet
high, that of Niagara being 167 feet.
The cataract is 13,123 feet wide, or
about two and a half times as wide
as Niagara. It is estimated that 100,
000,000 tons of water pass over, Niag
ara in an hour. A like estimate gives
the falls of Iguazu 140.000,000 tons.

beholder, the emotional state .that has
predominated ; so that the man who is
always laughing comes to look "a jolly
man," the thinker a thoughtful man,
and the woman who worries begins to
wear a worried look that persists.

PLAY GAME OF BALL
Gilmore, The Man With the Play "Bug"
Strips Dignified Citizens of.
Their Flabby Dignity
Elizabeth City witnessed an unique
spectacle Wednesday evening when
otherwise staid and sober business
and professional men, atfer their day's
labors, staged a base ball game, on the
courthouse lawn. It was some game,
what with Lorenzo D. Case in the
pitcher's box; T. T. Turner behind the
bat; LeRoy Culpepper on first base;
J. W. Munden on second, "W. O. Saun
ders on third and P. S. Vann, Charlie
Griggs, Marshall. Jones and "Walter
Wood in the field.
The same was played with an indoor
ball, otherwise some one would have
been injured. Rules were generally
thrown to the wind and Case threw the
ball about the same way. Turner made
a good catcher; there wasn't room for
the ball to get by him. And Saunders!
As a ball player he hasn't an inferior

Furthermore, his feet get out from

wet grass. He ruined a perfectly good
shirt and an enormous pair of pants
with grass stains trying to slide for

V. R. Gilmore, secretary of the Y.
M. C. A is responsible for Wednesday
evening's spectacle. He says ball
games for business men will be a
regular thing in Elizabeth City. This
man Gilmore is a "nut" on the sub
ject of play. He thinks everybody
ought to play and that if he can just
get the whole town to playing the
whole town will be happy and every
body will be on good terms with every
body else. He has got every boy in
town wrapped up in baseball or athlet
ics of one kmd or nother, and now he
is after the grown-ups, trying to make
them young again.
Wood In Demand.
The unique timber of Turkey and- a
few other localities the fine, hard
grained, compact boxwood so much
prized for engravings, rules, etc., is
now so scarce that the forest products
laboratory in Wisconsin is seeking
American substitutes. Only the Florida
boxwood and the wahoo of Arkansas
and other parts of the South approacn
nearly. Other hardwoods suitable Cor
some of he coarser uses include mas
tic, torchwood, witch hazel, great rho
dodendron, mountain laureL. thornap

How Chinaman Drinks Tea.
The Chinaman in preparing tea
places a pinch of leaves in a Chinese
teacup, which is without a handle,
pours boiling' water oyer them and
places the cover on the cup. In a
few seconds the tea is ready for drink

mouth, am. with the Angers of the

to flow into the" mouth as the cup is
Learn to Swim.
Swim every day and yju will not
develop large, ugly muscles, but beau
tiful, smooth-working ones under a
clean skin, a body that moves with
grace, bright eyes and a smile that
will carry you anywhere. One of the
greatest medical experts in the coun
try has classed swimming as the great
est of exercises, because, it uses the
whole muscular system, with moderate
demand on nerve control.
How Macaroni Got Name.
The origin of macaroni dates back
to one of the kings of Naples who
constantly taxed the inventive power
of his cook. One day a-dish was put
on the king's table of which he high
ly approved, And upon inquiry as to
the expense of the new dish, the cook
mentioned a sum which in those days
was thought high ; whereupon the king
exclaimed :."Bounf ma caronl," "Good
but very dear." Henc th oaiiib.
Vox Populi, Vox Del.
This is a very ancient saying and
means "The voice of the people is the
voice of God." It can be traced back
through Latin to Greek. It is found
first in a work on morals, by the Greek
poet, Hesiod, who- lived about the
eighth century before Christ.
