A motion whs innde to strike out "a Special Committee of Connelly and insert "the lueprctcra of the Coutty Prison." Not agreed to. An amend liidit was then ollercd to add the Inspectors ot the Prison to the Special Com uittee. Not agreed to. The bill was then passed. The following communica tions were received from the Major: One noti fying the Chamber that he had appoiutcd Messrs. Robert Briggs, J. Vaughn Merrick, Jacob (.. Nrntie, James Moore, and William Sellers au Advisory Commission under the ordinance for the inbpec'ion of steam boilers. Accompanying the communication was a report from the Ad visory Committee, suggesting certain amend ments to the Boiler bill. Another returniug without bis bignature the resolution authorizing the widening otthe footways upon Broad street, between Poplar and Coatea streets. A vote was taken upon that question, Shall the bill pass notwiths'andingjjthe Mayor's veto? and the bill fell. A resolution inviting Felect Council to meet Common in joint con vention on next Thursday to elect three diiectors of the Pennsylvania and three of the Northwestern Kail way. Aereed to. The chairman of the Committee on Highways reported a resolution to pave Sheridan Btreet from Berks to Montgomery avenue. Agreed to. A resolution instrueiingthe Chief Commissioner of Highways to direct the Supervisor of the Fifth and Sixth Wards tocompel the contractor, C. S. Close, to remove the obstructions on Dock street, below Third. The obstructions are the debris ot the old Pennsylvania Bank now in course of demolition. Kolerrcd to Committee on Highways. The resolution instructing tho Dneciors ol Girard College to suspend action concerning the Presidency of the College, came up and was laid on the table. Resolutions from Select Council were concurred in as follows: To lay water-pipe in Ash aud other streets; making certain transfers of items in the appro priation to the Water Department; to appoint a joint committee to receive the Councils of Co- um'ius. Ohio: annropriatlng certain ground in XI e Twtnty-firbt Ward foe school purposes; an ordinance to authorize the granting of a certain lease to mine coal. Last evening the Union MethoJist Episcopal Church, Fourth street, below Arch, was filled with an audience of ladies and gentlemen, assembled tor the purpose of participating in the hecond anniversary of the Church Exteu sion Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Rev. Thomas T.Tasker, President o I the Society, in the a Lair. The exercises were opened with ungitg. Iiev. D. Sturka then led in prayer. -The report of the Treasurer, J. T. Mason, was read. Tho amount on haul on the 13th of Nov., 18G5, was $8,957 98 Amount received up to Nov. 16, 1807, 26,1X318 $35,071,16. Amount distributed during the year, 25,81138 Balance on hand, .... $9,22978 The report of the Corresponding Secretary, Itev, O. J. Kennatt, sets forth that tue past year has been one of soriow and embarrassment to the socie'y. The executive ollicer, litv. Dr. Monroe, lellat his post. Financial ditlicultiea followed. The demands lor aid were exceed ingly large, reaching In the aggregate nearly half a million of dollars, while the Society has been able to disburse less tnau $30 000. With that sum they have extended aid to sixty-dvo churches in different Stales and Territories. The work of the Society is enlarging, and is ol vital importance to the Church and tithe coun try. Bishop Janes then made an address. He re ferred to the organization of the Church fcxten , sion Society in this city In ' 104, tue objects of which were for the purpose of providing com-' foitable churches throughout tho country for those of the Methodist denomination. Ctary, of Arkansas, followed in an interesting address, in which he fcavo a detailed account of the progress of Methodism in the sec tion ihst he reuresenttd. Rev. The cigar manufacturers ot this city met yesterday Blternoon, at 5 o'clock, at the N. 14. corner of Cherry aud Fourth btreets, to take action in re gard to their interests in reference to the late strike of the cigar makers. 1 he attendance was fair. Mr. Lewis d'uinpert presided. The unani mous expressions of ihe manufacturers were that t hey did not feel able to pay the prices de manded; that they could not submit to dictation roin any union; that a united tiTort and union on their part wfuU break up the 'ClGar-ruakers' Union; that they would uot submit to a price list founded upon the size ol the ctirar, since two cigars of the same measure may bo dLuerently made one fine and the other soil, or not so flue thence by pajina the same amount for a good clear as for one decidedly interior; that the n.ajof ty of workmen are not in union with this Me dictatorial action ot the ClliHr-mkers, Union, but that a lew in the great body had con. cened the movement; thst eaeb manufacturing establishment should Lave its own list of prices. A communication to the Mayor from Mr. Kneass, Chief Engineer and Surveyor, contains the following facts In refer ence to Broad street. Mr. Kneass says: "Broad street, as laid out upon tne plans of the cm. its length, and also its width between cuibs, has a width of 113 feet between tho houses, and a leng' h of 11 98-100 miles from the river at Lcngue Island to the city line. From 1-eague Island to Poplar street, a dNUnce of five and three-quarter miles, and also from Norris street lo the city line a distance of 5 36 108 miles, the wlath between curbs is 77 feet, while between Poplar and Norris streets, a length of I ot a mile, the width between curbs is 67 feet thus n aking a total of over eleven miles In lencfh, with a width of 77 feet for earnaae way, and only of a mile 67 feet. Ouly 9j miles of this street is now r pen and in use." The Chief also states that the distance frocn l eague Inland to the river Delaware, upon the line of Broad street, extended northward, from the best Information we have, would be about 85 miles, striking the r.ver at or near New Hope. A bill to create a commission for opening Broad street, from the city lino to the river, north ward, as a State road, has already been before the Legislature. TnE Mercantile Library. Last evening, a nieetiue of citizens was held at the Board of Trade Boom', for the purpoe of devising uia sures to assist the Directors of the Mercantile Library in their efforts to secure a fund for the improvement ot the property on Tenth street, near Chesnut. Mayor McMichacI presided. Mr. Perot, President of the Library, stated th pro gress made by the Directors in their efforts to secure the money needed to place the new building in a condition for the proper arrange ment ol the book". $100,01)0 will be needed by the UoatfJ; but $50,000 now will enable them to make the alterations ahd" auditions, ami then leave the Library iu debt $50,000. In the course of a discussion by thoBe present, it was agreed to secure, It possible, the $100,000. so as to keep the Libiary clear of debt. Several gentlemen present subscribed $1000 each towaids the fund, and a committee of ihirteen, to be appointed by the Mayor, was agreed upon. The Committee will act in conjunction with the Directors. AMUSEMENTS. Amkbican Academy of Music, Mr. S. C Campbell, the great baritone of the Kichlngs Opera Company, takes his benefit this evening, and oners as 'tue attraction William Vincent Wallace's masterwork, Mtiritana, which upon its representation last week drew a very large audience, and proved a most delectable opera at the hands of this troupe. To-morrow (Satur day) afternoon, for the matinee, the Bohemian Oiri. This beautiful opera will be presented for the Ixst time. In it Mr. Campbell sings toe "Heart Bowed Down" In splendid style; Mr. Castle executes "Then You'll Remember Me,"' and the "Fair Land of Poland;" Miss Richings will sing the scena and aria, "I Dreamt that I Dwelt in Marble Halls," "Come with the Gipsy Bride," etc. On Monday evening benedict's famous new opera, The Lily of Ki larney, will be presented. Chesnut Street Theatre. We are pleased to observe the success ot Mrs. Bowers in her new play of Marie Antoinette which has been admi lably dramatized lor her by Mr. Benjamin I d ward W ooii. from Miss Muhlback's famous historical novel. Mrs. Bowers acts the part with remarkable grace and power, and she is very credirably supported by the talented com pany. Marie Antoinette will have a long run. It will be presented this evening for the benefit of Mrp. Bowers. At the matinee to-morrow alteruoon yap o' Day will be presented, in which Mrs. Bowers enacts "Kate Kavauagh." Walnut. Mr. Edwin Forrest concludes his great engagement this erenlng, playing Hamlet. To-morrow evening. La Tourde Aeste and Wal lace will be presented, with Mr. Barton Hill in both pieces. On Monday, Mr. Jouu Brougham appears in a new play. Arch. Mrs. John Drew appears in Surf to nieht for her benefit, supported by the stock company. To-morrow al'iernoon first Surf mati nee. No one should fail to see I he new comedy. American Theatre. Mr. Fox continues his tlelightiul variety entertainments. A matinee as usual to-morrow afternoon. The Philadelphia Circus, at Tenth and Cal lowhill stieets, is a fixed institution, and is de servedly tuccessful. Mr. William La Rue, the great equestrian, and a full troupe of artistes appear every n'ght, and ou Wednesday and Sat urday afternoons. At the New Philadelphia Opera House in Seventh street, below Arch. Bud worth, Eph. Horn, Frank Moran, Young, Bowman, andTuni son & Co. 's great Minbtrel Troupe continue to delight immense audiences. Carncross & Dixet are doing an immense business, as usual. An excellent entertainment is offered every night, embracing wit, humor, sentiment, and song. Proveksob and Madame Macallisisb, at Con cert Hall, give eplendid entertainmeuts every night, embracing illusion, wonders, and miracles. A gilt matinee to-morrow afternoon.
