A Wife Wated. " I want, who does not want a wife ?" A bosom friend, a friend for life, Whose generous love, in woe or weal, May 'round my heart like sunshine steal: Smiling the clouds of care away. And making hours of darkness day. I wapt a wife, whose noble worth May lore me from the snares of eart- Whose fervent love shall link with mine, And, round my heart its tendrils twine, Embracing, while its tender curds A kind support in grief affords. I want a wife to share my joy, And when the earesof earth annoy, :To sympathize with feelig heart, .Joy to receive and Joy impart A faithful sharer of my lot, Each open feeling and each thought, 1 want a wife-oh! base the soul That back upon itself can roll The warm affections Ged has given g' yield a sweet foretaste of heav'n, And in.itself absorbed can steel Itshatme 'gaiast what others feel I want a wife ! The Opelouas Patriot of the 18th inst. says: Sunday morning we had quite a snow storm-the first of the season, worth talk ing about. Monday and Tuesday morn ings heavy white frosts were visible for some time alier sunrise-(all suplposed to have been superinduced by Ireland's large cargo of ice at Washington, but we don't think so.) We are aware how far this unseasonable weather has injured the growing crops. For a day or two past, fine, summer (lays and reasonable cool nights have brightened the hopes of our planters. The Mount Lebanon Babtist of Thurs. day last says : On the night of the 11th a light snow storm tell for several hours, and next morning the tops of hour houses were cov. ered with sleet. On Monday morning. 13th, there was ice and a heavy frost. Our forests look sear and sad. Many of the large oak, ash, hickory and other trees look as if they would never bud again. The wheat crop is killed and must be a total failure; and not a peach, plum, cher ry, or apple are we to expect from our orch ards. Then again yesterday morning, 15th, there was considerable frost. The Pioneer, of Assumption, of Sunday last says We have had a second visit from frost and ice the past week, greatly to the de triment of the cane and corn. The 'ros. j pects for a large crop of su.gr which were so promising are for the moment b!asted, and the great advantage gained by thea forwardness of the cane is lost. The sea-,' son for the growth and maturity of this;, crop is a short one under the most favor- i able circumrstances, and unless we are f.a rored by the late appearance of frost ini the fall, it cannot exceed 2.t0,000 hhds. During the month of April, 1849, the morning of the 16th, we hadil a heavi frost and some ice, which killed most of the cane to the ground. At the usual' grinding time in the fall, the cane was in the midst of its greatest growth, and was excedingly green and unproductive of su gar; we had no frost to do any harm un till after Christmras, and those who did not grind early in the season made good crops. It is to be hoped that we shall be equal. ly fortunate this time. From the Lake Providence Herald, of Saturday, we extract the following: It is a common remark in this vicinity. among the oldest inhabitants, that a more backward spring than the present was never known. Vegitation in some instan. ces has failed entirely, as with cotton. which will have to be replanted. Corn. which was doing so finely prior to the late freeze, has been cut down even with the' surface of the ground, but may recuperate, 'the weather permitting. Almost every species of vegetable and fruit, which es caped destruction, has been seriously re. tarded by the extraordinary chilliness of the season. A SPRIT INOlPED WITH IIOT W ATER. -The California Express tells the follow.' ing good spirit story of a scene which wa. witnessed at Wood's Crossing the oth er night. There is in that locality a cer tain M. D., who professes to be a medi. urn, and who had succeeded in winning many proselytes to the new faith. At one of the Doctor's circles, and the last, we believe, over which he has presided, a certain Mr. C. was present, and being lather skeptical on the subject of Spirit. nalism, slyly procured a kettle of hot wa. ter. All things being in readiness, the Doctor requested the spirit to manifest it. self, which was done by a rap on the floor I immediately under the table. Mr. C., not 'being altogether satisfied that the noise proceeded froms the table, suggest. ed that the Doctor again ask the spirit to manifest its presence, which was done, and at the same time the kettle of hot water was accidentally spilled on the floor, when, lo and behold, out came a live man, with tattered garment and smoking like a furnace! The circle adjourned inmmnedi. ately, and the Doctor is at loss to know how the man came there, though all saw the hole be came out of! RAi. AT Hoops ,vo Monz.-A lady 1fll overboard near New London. a few nights since, and would have been drowned but for the hoops in her dress, which rendered the same somewhat balloonish, and withal answered the purpose of a more compli. cated life preserver. 0 The Bible says "all flesh is grass." but that don't justify a good Catholic in eating pork during Lent, and calling it greens. A city is di ided into collections of five ftrniiies: every mem. ber of each division being made answer able for the conduct of the others. Every extraordinarv ceccurrence which tials cut in a household is thus reported to the civil administration by four witnesses. House arrest is the usa.tl penalty f,,r irregular conduct. The doors and wiindows of the otfender's house are closed, generallt to, a hundred days; his enmpl, oyments are suspended; salary, if any, topped ; and the friend and the banter alike tIr. biddn e entrance. Each ijo, sehold is hell bound to produce a man capalie of bar. inri arms. Guard-houses are establi-hed iu every street in the city. Each street has a barrier at its issues, and can be cut of fi onm communication with the rest to the city at a tlmomtlt'li's notice. MJoRtON CHILDRENE.-A correspond. ent at Salt Lake City writes: In regard to the Mormon children-they appear like a neglected, uncared-for set, getter. ally dirty and ill-clad. The majority oh them ate girls, and this troubles the vwo. men very mutch. fr they know that a fe male is doo.med to slairry and a life of misery. It is also a singular fact that a large portion of themn are white headed. These children ate suffered to grow tip Iin ignorance and vice. The Mormoes boast or exult in calling things, as they say, by their right names: all parts of the human body are spoken of familiarly, in in terms that wouid make anybody but a Mormon blush. and they say it is a part of their duty, if not of their religion, ti teach their children a knowledge of "' is. sites," as they term it.
