Most of our readers will remember that a few years ago a movement was start-t1 to raise subscriptloins to build a canal between Bayou Teche and Grand ,Lake, at Charenton, In St. Mary parish-the point where the two bodies of water "ome nearest together. A canal one mile in length would enable steam boats, flats, rafts of logs. etc., to pass through, and save a distance of al, nut seventy-five miles, and it is estimated that the cost of dig ging this canal would not exceed $50,000. When the enterprise was spoken of b.ifore the sum of $20,000 was promptly subscribed by a few individuals.
