We have of late. on several o.'asions, re called to the minds of our readers the im portance of the leaf totl, ateo trade, which for merly came down to us in great quantities from the West, and was a large and im portant contributor to the commercial im portance and wealth of our it y. We also al luded to the efforts being made to restore this trade, and the encouraging prospects of such a revival. We have recently seen a let ter to a prominent house in this city. from one of the largest operators in tobacco for the English market, to be found in this coeuntry, written at len derson, Ky., in which the announcement is made that he anti his coadjutors in the same business are particularly desirous of shipping their "strip" tobacco to LiverpoI anid Lon don by way of New Orleans. All they desire is a positive assurance that they' will find ample facilities for quick shipment at this port and reasonable rates of freight. We may mention, in passing, that the description of tobacco sent to the English markets is called "strips," whic*h is the beaf with t he stems cut out, iby which process the weight or the curdl plant is 'reduced and the duty torre'.spond inu~ly lessened. Thlte (ins are exported generaily to Bremen flor the German mnarket, an: t are ground up for smk ing. With a little judlicious exertion, and concerted and htarmnio)ni)u action on the part of our receivers and ship agents, we .could easily and speedily attract to our port a very large portion of the tl.baco which is now be ing shipped from the West to Atlantic ports for exportation to foreign countries. From all accounts our Western friends engaged in the trade are willing sad anxio.' to gi,'e usa i trial. jzýPai~~ ·~s~;~~ FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MNONKTART.
