Editor )Democrao-I note the fat that the City Council yesterday unanimously ,,tied Mr. Zacharle the sum of $500 for seavices rendered in the case of Cavanac vs. McCaf Now, the City Counell are supplied with a City Attorney and Assistant City Attorney (if their ownchoice. The function of mach is to. attend to the law husiness of the city, and each is well paid for his services. Many an able lawyer of this city would he glad to do the dutios of either post faithfully for the ay. Will the Council point to the authority for such appropriations of our money ? Can neither of the attorneys of the city find time to take such a case as; the quarrel of Cavanac and MeCaffrey intoA court ? Last sumnmer both the attorney, s were away. Mr. Blanc attPendhlO to their busliness. Neither of themr paid him, but the city did. Recently I noticed that he has been paid for some other work. Where is the law for all this ? Or is this honesty and reform ? I trust our voters are noting the great wrong. LOUISIANA. The Donaldsonville Cannone ,rs are going into encampment on Bayou Lafourche. An organization of veteran Confederate soldiers is to be formed at Baton Rouge. The police jury of St. Bernard parish has decided not to close cofit-lhouses on Sundays. A fire In Baton Rouge Friday night de stroyed $11,000 worth of property; insured for $8500. There are alretdy thirty-nine candidates for the Legislature in (laiborne parish, says the Guardian. We hear that some kind of hug is injuring the cane on the plantations above Franklin. 1St. Mary Enterprise. 8. F. Baird fish commissioner, has written to Hon. E. Wi. Rolbrtson announcing that he will place shad In the Amite river. St. Mary farmers are making arrangements to manufacture white sugar this year. A number of vacuum pans are being put up. The colored people of St. Martinsville have organized a fire comnpany. The engine and engine-house were contributed by two public spirited citizens. We are informed that the crops throughout the parish are in a favorable condlition. Bayou DuLarge has the best suhhle-eane in the parish.-[Terrebonne Courier. The police jury of the parish of St. .James has administered the affairs of its parish in ia satisfactory manner, has paid off a large por tion of the old debt piled up by its Itadihiol predecessors, anti claims no compensation for services. Too early for politics, say some of of our friends. We say so, too, lut when we know that our Radical foes are busy c.ioiIoitiIng schemes and laying plans for the ca'mpaign. it behooves our people to te on the alert and make some pre aration to nmct the threat etned danger.--[Morehouse Clarion. Three new sugar-holuses are being erected in the Attakapas-bv M r. E. H. lovy, on the east side of Bayou Vermillion; lr'. Carter. a few miles back of Now Therla, who will cease the cultivation of cottin andt take to cane; and Mr. J. Mestayer, one mile southwest of New Iberia. All of these will grind cane for their neighbors as well as themselves. We feel safe in the opinion that no town. State, parish or other locality on this con tinent has come anywhere near making so clean a collection of taxes as has lBayou Sara. Just think of it; the delinquent list amounts to only $14 47, and of this $6; Is absolutely certain to be collected, leaving only the in significant .nm of $8 47 the total amount un collected.-[Feliclana Sentinel. Donaldsonville had its municipal election last Saturday. The result was as follows: Mayor, Fred Duffel; secretary, J. A. Landry; collector, a tie between Augustin Bercegeay and J. A. Duffel; treasurer. David Israel; aldermen, Solomon Schonberg, Madison Car roll, Severin Ricard. H. S. Bondreaux, V. Maurin and Ursln LanIry. The ('hief Is well pleased with the ticket elected. From the bayou country we obtain the most encouraging reports in relation to i l[e crops. The corn has a line color, grows fast and is well worked. The cotton is being' scraped and thinned out, and on some places has already received the first light plowing. Potato slips are being set out, and this crop will be larger this than last year. with a I Ipoper season, of course.-- Marksville Bul l . . . .. . I From nearly every part of our parish we hear reports of the ravages of the cut worm and beetles upon the young corn, cotton andi sugar plants. In many Instances planters have had to replant corn, upon which vermin depredate the most. With the Axception of the damage done by hugs the crops are look ing well, growing fine and give promise of fine results. There Is, however, considera ble complaint about the.stubble cane. [Baton Rouge Advocate. On Saturday last little Louie, son of J. 1 Monroe Brown, Esq., aged about ten years, accidentally shot himself with a shotgun while out hunting, the load lodging in his left side, causing almost instant death. It seems he was climbing a rail fence near his brother's IS. D. Brown's) residence, and after leaning the gun against the fence he endeavored to pull it up by the muzzle, when the hammer caught against a rail and exploded the cap.- IMorehouse Clarion. We earnestly enjoin it upon our tax collee tor to collect the poll tax. A large portion of it goes to the school fund, and any failure to collect this tax falls heavilyupon our scho1ols. InA177 the amount of tpoll tsx -oelkcled in this parish amounted to about $130, when it. should have been $3000. We look to Mr. Coyle to assess every man in the parish. and we look to the next Legislature to make the payment of poll tax a prerequisite to voting. --[Pointe Coupee Pelican. The report is general throughout the parish that the corps are in a magnificent condition and that the prospect is immensely better than it was at this season last year. The stubble cane never was i't.ottr, and although this year's planting has not turned out well, the deficiency will be suppliedt by the forward growth of that which is really good. The corn crop is in splendid con.lition, and in sorme instances has had its last working. A little rain is needed now. but thie cropns an do with out It for a short time. Iberville South. On Tuesday evening about 4 o'clock. on April 23, a cowardly murder was committed on Mr. J. A. Ford's plantation, three miles above Collinsburg, in this parish. Charles Bowler was the name of the murdered man, and Humphrey Holiday the name of tle as sassin; both colored men. Bowler was plow ing in the field. Holiday stealthily crept up and shot him in the back, lodging ten buck shot in his body. The poor man fell upon his plow, exclaiming: "Lord, have mercy! hloli day has killed me'!" He died within half an hour. The Sunday previous Bowlerand IHoli -day had a fight, in which Holiday came out second bst Politics was the cause, Bowler being a prominent D)emocrat and his a-,assin a Republican.- [Bossier Banner. MORMON LEADERS QUARRELING. Brighem Yours n Hetre Acknowledglng that the Prophet stole $36 1A00. [New York Star.i The heirs of the dead prophet have yietlde to the pressure of the holy. priesthoti. Tay lor has beaten them. He has held them. says the Salt Lake Tribune, over the abyss of hell by the nape of the neck, threatening to shove them in head over heels if they continued In their refusal to "pony up" with him a part of the estate. Friday and Saturday the Twelve Apostles spent their time in "laboring" with the numerous offspring of the departed Brig ham to show them wherein their de funct dad had plundered the church. The church books were inspected by Mr. M., Hide and Ernest Young, three of I the heirs, as exoerts, and they arrived at the conclusion that the old man had appropri ated to his own use $361,000 of the church funds, which they announced, on -behalf of the other heirs, a willingness to ppay and Taylor 'concluded to take It in satitsfacton of all iss 'claims against the estate. Accordingly the t'aeatre, the Council House, the Social Ha). and the two woolen factories at Provo ant St. George respectively were settled upon s,' the consideration for the steal which the heirs admit their dead dad guilty of. The heirs have decided to turn over this property because they consider it " dead horse,' and Taylor accepted it because it is clear plun der, and is much more than he could possibly recover If he were to take his claim into court. Hence we sum the nlusiness up thus: Taylor is $361,000 ahead; the heirs have branded their own dead father as a thief, and are out of pocket $361,000. ..-..- .HP4-- . . CAVEATED UNITED STATES BONDS.
