The recent address of Mr R V

large and representative audience was
present every seat in tbe spacious ball
being taken In times past the an
SIR B W THOMPSON
nounccment that eucb tin address -was
to be delivered would have preclpitakd
an attack of the most vicious character
from critics who had not taken tbe
pains to inform themselves of Mr
Wa hingtons vie8 on public qucs
tionB and who knew nothing of his re
markable achievements But printers
ink has eo widely diflueul the strong
and nanly sentiments of tbe Tuskegee
Wizard atd the value of his education
aleysttm is so well known to all who
read as they run that few have the te
merity to mount the rostrum in oppo
Billon and still fewer can hope for a
tolerant hearing from an intelligent au
dience Thus a meeting where the
foes of industrialism were afforded the
freest latltuda or oppression bflOAluoB
veritable love feast
Mr Thompson reviewed the entire
public career of Mr Washington and
answered in detail tbe criticisms re
corded against bim quoting from
speeches and presenting data that
conld not be contioverted Mr Thomp
son said in part
I come to today to talk about a man
of our race who has risen by his own
might from the depths oJ human
bondage from the darkness of slavery
and from the thraldom of ignorance
and poverty tothehigbestdevelopment
oflered by freedom intelligence and in
duttry
I ccme today toanaljze Willi you the
character and metbeds of a man who
has won aruo on two contir ta by
theer force of his pi rsoaoli y and labors
and whose ears have been mRetorirjg
with tte plaudits of tho foremost
scholars statesmen scientists sociolo
gists and i conomiets of America aud
Eurcpe without rtgaid to race color
creed or ccndiiion I shall sssume that
05 rer cent of the thinkii g element of
the Negro race understands and appie
ciates the great work that is belog ao
cemphsbed by Mr Washington for tbe
uplifting ol the race
Mr Washington is nothing if not
prat cal lie believts in facing the
Biluatson as he finds it noc as he
would have it He fees wnh tbe clear
vision born of experience that force
cannot settle moral problems and ap
peals to the enlightened influences of
civilization and to the arbitrament of
time for the adjustment of our griev
ances The South cannot anymore
than can any individul be brought to
a realizing sense of its duty to the Ne
gro by persistent abuse Mr Washing
ton counsels harmony between the ra
ces not the harmony of surrender but
the harmony of mutual forbearance
mutual acknowledgment of interde
pendi nt relations aud mutual helpful
ness to the end that all may reap tbe
benefits that come from unity of pur
rose and concert of action in doing all
that can be done for tbe development
of our common country and for the re
demption of tbe Soutb
It has been my fortune to see much
of Mr Washington and I know him to
bo honest genuine sincere He says
in private what ne says In public He
says in the Eoutb what he says in the
North He is no politician or partisan
Hie theories are agreed to by as many
republicans as democrats and co tbe
leaders of both parties he is a welcome
visitor and tbe custodian of their re
epect and confidence He is we poised
and sensible Flattery cannot spoil
him end cenBure cannot discourage
him He goes at every undertaking
cautiMiply but it Is the caution of th
THE COLORED AMERICAN WASHINGTON
pioneer conscious of the dangers that
must be met and overcome by ap
proaching them in the right way not
the hesitation of the coward or trim
mer He is polished in manner clear
in speech and never forgets that to a
large degree be is taken as a standard
of the possibilities of bis race and bears
himself at all times with a dignity that
is becoming to his position He is
equally at home among the simple far
mers of tbe black belt of Alabama and
ith tbe dukeB and lords of Europe
He has reached the point where he no
longer seeks honors they are thrust
upon him and thus proves his princi
pie Get something that some one
wane and he will come to you re
gardless of the colorrf your skin or the
texture of your hair He sands up
manfully for the good people of the
South and he condemns the bad ones
he praises the growing spirit of thrift
and enterprise of his section and he
denounces her lawlessness He pleads
for an educated ballot as a means of
placing a premium upon intelligeiee
in both races but mrists that the pres
ent law Ehall remain un il there is as
surance that a qualified suffrage will
apply to black and white alike He
asks that tbe young Negro take hold of
the common things of life trim which
white men are growiug rich and digni
fy them by djing them in an uncom
mon way He says to ihem get a
bank account and property and no
ballot box keeper will turn away from
the polio the man who owns balf tht
block in which the polling place is lo
cited He says there is not a gnln of
prejudice in tbe American dollar and
lells you that independence is a m th
and claims to recognition will re
main empty claims until you demon
at rale your capacity to do something
more than talk own someihiug make
something manage something and
make yourselves the indi pensable fac
tors in tbe upbuilding of a community
Develop an employing class acd beable
to make the politician who wauls your
influence buut yon up and tell you
what he will do for your peiple in
stead of haunting him for the price of a
pair of shoes until driven away as a
mendicant He believes in underpin
ning our racial struc ure with a reliable
wage earning class who will stand like
army backing up the learned and pro
fession leaders Hec ntends that we
must be true to outselves and organize
nur cipi a our labor and our intelli
gencenot for offence but fcr defence
and advancement as a people We
must cease to be represented in th
worlds maiktt by a cipher We must
begin at the bottom as the
wLitc man has done and then
work upward not the reverse we
must hold on to all we have in the way
of employment aid find new ones
The man who makes a place for him
self is more secure in it tban he is one
into which somebody has shoved him
We must weave ourselves as the Jew
has done into the business an- patriot
ic interests ol tbe communities in which
we live Tha man who owns a large
block of stock in a railroad line will
not be foicsd iLto a Jim Crow car
and tbe owrer of tbe ground upon
chich a big trust building stands can
always r de in the elevator These ae
the homely tiutbs the enunciation of
which has madeBcokerT Washington
ihe accepted leader of thought political
aural aid social ethics among the
Kegrces of America if not of the
world He is listoned to because be
has done something tangibe When
his criucs speak they deal In what
Shikespfare so pertnemly terms
Words words words and it Is an
open secret that tbe most violent of Mr
Washingtons critics are those who
have never beard bim speak nor have
they read in full a single speech deliv
ered by him They too often judge
him by what somebody told them they
beard he had said When Mr Wash
ington is asEed by what warrant be
speaks for a iace of 10000000 souls no
word need ho utter be may simply
point as I do now to that miniature
city of Tuskegee bis monument of
thirty years of struggle ard triumph
He can tread her 2 G7 acres of land
and gaze upon her 42 buildings ereted
by Negro hands He may grasp the
hands of 1164 students from 23 states
and from Jamaica Porto Rico Cuba
Arrica and England and show deeds
in fee to 300000 worth of property
This is the real Booker T Washing
ton In the language of the Washing
ton Post of this morning
There is the model for tbo black
and white alike He has learned the
secret of power and promotion He is
a true prophet of his race
As such I c mmend him to you my
friends and ask that auy indictment
that may be standing in your minds
against him be quashed at once and for
all time
Mr Thompsons able presentation of
the character and work of this foremost

to the echo
