various committees The work of the

A largely attended public meeting
was held Friday nighi at the Vermont
Avenue Bap cist church Bishop Alex
ander Walters presided and described
the grand results achieved by the
ceuference and declared that the Coon
cil was here to stay Enthusiastic
speoches were delivered by former
Governor B S Pinchback Attorney
Edward Everett Brown of Boston T
Thomas Fortune editor of the New
York Age and Attorney F L McGhee
of Minnesota On the platform besides
these were Congressman Wbite Bishop
Harris J E Bruce Prof Lawson and
others
The reporb of the committee on reso
lutions was handed in and read by the
secretary It was in the form of some
what sweeping reEolulionf which com
menced by congratulating the Council
on the increase of interest manifested
in its workings point to the benefits
to be derived and express the hore
that at the Indianapolis meeting it will
be found that the whole race has been
imbued with the value of such an organ
ization
The President is praUed for having
appointed commissioned officers from
the A fro Americans in two regiments
aud an agent at tlae Paris Exposition
for the exhibit from the race at the
Exposition it is hoped that Congress
will promptly vota 150U9 asked for
Legislation against ob law Is urged
on Congress
Commending the Ci mpacker bill to
reduce southern Congressional seats to
tally with votes cast and tho action of
the republican National Committee in
refusing to reduce representation at
conventions the resolutions go on to
say that it is not loyal Afro Americans
who are to be legislated against but
disloyal white people and indorse the
measures to investigate and test the
disfranchisement ot the rao in the
South
The resolutions set forth that while

District that the colored people are
discriminated against in the police
court and in cases where civil rights
are at iSbue and receive neither justice
nor oourtesy The President is asked
to interfere
Complaint is made that the Afro
Americans have practically no repfe
sentation in the census work The
adoption of a separate sleepi tg car law
in Georgia is condemned and the whole
penal system of the South is made a
subject of protest Concluding the
resolutions invoke divine favor on the
work of the council to secure justice
and fair play The resolutions are

During the Thursday recess the visit
ing delegates were entertained by an
elaborate dinner spread at Joiners Cafe
by the members of the local council

and Saturday evening a public recep
lion was tendered to all strangers hore
for the holidays at Odd Fellows Hall
Saturday afternoon a select party en
joyed a luncheon at Gtay and Costleys
The Councils meeting was highly
encouraging and the year starts of

ber of young ladies and gentlemen
gathered at the residence of Miss Em

an evening of pleasure Music and
mirth held fall sway and King Carni

Historical Club was held at the resi
dence of Mr Aaron Oliver 336 Hamil
ton street on December 28 A splen
did musical and literary program was
among the features of the eyening The
first selection was a piano solo by Miss
Anna Moore followed by the address
of welcome by the critic of the club J
is Bruce A solo by Mrs L J Mann
and Miss Anna Moore reading by Miss
Eva Williams The Negro In It A
paper on the life of T Thomas Fortune
by Mrc Annie Pickett solo by Mrs L
J Mann a short talk by Mr J R
Frisby and a gramophone recital by
Mr L J Mann The object of the
club is to study Negro history and
make itself acquainted with the achieve
ments of the Negro in letters art sci
ence medicine and ail industries that
dignify labor whether it be of head or
of the hand After the exercises cards
and pleasant converse was the order of
the evening Too much praise cannot
be given Mrs L J Mann and her com
mittee of ladies Mrs Annie Pickett
and Misb Anna Moore in making the
reception a social success Miss Eva
Williams one of Albanys most refined
intelligent and accomplished young
ladies added much to the evenings en
joyment by her affable and engaging
manners to every one At midnight a
bountiful repast was served in the din
ing room Muoh regret was expressed
at the absence of the Director of the
club Mr Henry A Spencer who was
called to Rochester The club express
es thanks to Mr Aaron Oliver who
kindly offered the hospitalities of his
cosy home to the club and its friends
Mr Oliver is one of Albanys progress
ive young men Noticaable among the

oonnected clerically with the Record
ers office began the new year with an
appointment in the Census Bureau
He was detailed to the division of
manufactures an annex to the Geologi
cal Surrey for which elegant quarters
have been established in the big build
ing formerly occupied by the Post
Office Department
