He still has faith in the keel.boats as against centre-boards for the yachts of the futuro, and attributes the defeat of the Thistle, which, before he saw her bottom, he believed would win, to the faot that sho was cut up too niuoh forward. " It was thought hero," he said, " that the only way to win tho America's Cup was to fight the defenders with their own weapon, a centre-board. The Englishmen have to con struct vessels whioh will stand a great voyage, but.belng on this side of tho Atlantio, wo could compete with greater advantage by trying with a boat more tho style of tho American yacht." Thoro is an im mense demand for hard coal throughout tho Eastern States, and coal shippers at this port hold largo numbers of orders which they aro unable to fill owing to tho scarcity of coal caused by the strike in the Lehigh regions. The Schuylkill regions are nnablo to fur. nish enough coal to meet the demands. This scarcity of coal has greatly intorfercd with the coastwise trade of the port, and many of the old traders are going to Norfolk, Locust Point and other Southern ports in hopes of obtaining better despatch. Some vessols have been kept at the coal piers from ten days to two weeks awaiting opportunity to load, while others have been compelled to leave light. Policemen Testify for Welch.
