MajorGen Pflug the chief of staff of Vjceroy Alexieff telegraphed
from Port Arthur today as follows
The situation at Port Arthur is unchanged
A Sotnia of Cossacks marching from Wiju captured a Japanese
major Tatsaru with soldiery and two civilians
The reports regarding the enemy are generally contradictory and
I
scarce
It is confirmed that troops of Yuan Shai Kai commaiidermchief
of the Chinese army are being despatch to TsinChoti and Ku rte
All is quiet in Manchuria S 1tf
JAPANESE FLEET ON THE ALERT
A special Port Arthur despatch says the Japanese fleet was observed
Feb 1 cruising off that port
Reports from northern Corea saYthe Coreans are showing decidedly
friendly attitude to the Russians
The Manchurian railroad is conveying troops without difficulty to the
various points of concentration
Native reports say that the Chinese pirates snce the outbreak of hos
tilities have been displaying such activity in eastern Asiatic waters as to
almost paralyze the coasting trade S
DENIAL OF LAKE BAIKAL TRAGEDY
With reference the sensational stories of a disaster to Russian
troops at Lake Baikal one report saying that three regiments werq
drowned while attempting to cross the icecovered take1 it is explained
that the TransBaikal line was blocked at the Baikal station during the
night of Feb 18 by an avalanche of snow which fell from a neighboring
mountain A train having troops on board dashed into the obstruction
the locomotive was derailed and in the succeeding live cars one soldier
was killed five were severely injured and fourteen were slightly hurt
Traffic was expected to be resumed he following day
Further advices from Port Arthur today ay that all the women and
children and most of the male civilians have left that place and that prac
tically only the garrison remains STile
t
The engagement referred to above indicates trit the Kusil nand Jap
nnese armies are drawing close together along the Coreai frontier and
probably presages a decisive battle within every short time 5
The Japanese have been pouring iroops into Corea and undoubtedly
have by this time an army of respectable size within striking distance
the Yalu River to the banks of which the scouts have already advanced
That the Russians should send Cossack troops into Corea appears to
show that any attempt on the part of Japan to enter Manchuria by cross t
ing the Yalu River will be vigorously opposed
