DESCENT INTO A COAL-MINE.
1...M...N, Oct. 'J, 1-U.
."On Tuesday last 1 went, by
invitation .'f Mr. C-, a rich ..1.1 collier of St.
Helen's, about twelve nul?-* from Liverpool, to
visit his Coal mines. My friend S-accompa?
nied me, und we ai rived there ?it noon in tin? iui!
enrs. Our host ?int us with a guide to the office,
where we found the bead ?gent with a friend wail?
ing t""i n?. So we immediately prepared ourselves
to descend. This, by the way, was no ordinary
tusk, a? we were obliged t" change all onr ?ar
ments, from head to foot. Imagine your humble
servant arrayed in a heavy blue pilot-clo'h suit?
the pantaloons made for a man at least tour times
my size, s<> that tliev hung upon me like a cloak
upon ti walking-stick. The arms of mv* coat wer.'
made ..? black linen, which ?at as snug n? the . .w
.?: garment ?at loose. My head-piece was o glazed
cap, while my feet were securely packed into o
pair of heavy shoes, with wooden soles at least iwe
inch's thick. A good, substantial oaken cudgel
completed the outfit.
The party consisted of the head agent and his
deputy, one of his :i ends, Mr. S. and myself, tn.>
under colliers and u boy. We cuiried lighted tur
red ropes t" enable tis to j?ick our waj down the
tunnel which leads to the mine. These tunnels
me so expensive in their construction that ihey
?ire seldom made, except when they can serve for
two or three mines. The descent from ihr surface
is at an inclination of two yards in ?very seven.?
The highl of the tunni Is seid ?m exceeds foui feet
They are used merely for conveying ponies to the
mines, where they are employed to draw the coal
cars upon the railwaj from th?> mirks to the ?haft,
: up which the roui is hoisted. Our party com?
menced the descent? und, ' accoutred a? 1 ? a?.' I
?followed. The whole atluir put me in mind o
soitie ??! Stcphens's vivid descriptions of some of
tus explorations. And i?. needed but a ?litht ex
ertion to throw back the fancy to the older, lime
when fuiries, hobgoblins, and all ?o-ts ?if a'?..- lerie
were so abundant on our earth, and when we cer
