ROSALINK
BV JAMES RUSlELt lOWELt.
Thou look'd'at ?.?n mo all yesternight.
Thine eyes were blue, thv hair was bright
As when we murmured our troth-plight
Beneath the thick ?tar?, Rosalin?.* !
Thy hair was braided on thy bead
As on the day we two were wed.
Mine ?.*%-e-- ?carcc* knew if thou wert d?**t?l?
But my shrunk w*art knew, Rosaline !
The death-watch tick'd behind the wall,
The blackn???? rustled like a pail.
The moaning wind did rise and fall
Among- th?"* bleak pinc-s, Rosalin?- !
Mv heart beat thickly in mi*,e <>ar':
The lid? may shut ont fleshly fe*rs,
But still the" spirit sees und hear-*,
Its eyes are "idles*, Ro?alin?-.'
A wildhess rushing suddenly,
A knowing ?om?- ill shape is nigh,
A wish for death, a ff-ar t<? die,?
Is not this vengeant?, Rosaline!
A loneliness that is not lone,
A love quit?.* withered up and gone,
A strong ?oui trampled from it? throne,?
What would'st thou farther, Rosaline !
' Ti? lone such moonless nights as thes?-,
Strani-?- sounds an* out upon the breeze,
And lb?* leavrts shiver in th?* tree.**,
And then ti.ou comest, Rosaline!
1 se?-m to hear the mourners go,
With long black garments trailing slow,
And plume? anodding to and fro,
As ouro I heard them. Rosaline!
Thy shrbutl it is of snowy white,
And, in the middle of the night,
Thou standest moveless and upright.
Gazing upon in?*, Rosaline!
There i? no sorrow in thine ??y??.
But evermore that meek surprise)?
?h, G'mI ! her gentle ?-j?irir tries
To deem m?- guiltless, Rosaline!
Above thy grave the robin sings,
And swarms of bright and happy things
Flit nil iiHout with sunlit wines)?
But 7 am cheerless, Rosaline!
The violets on the riiilnck toss,
The grave-stone is o'ergrown with mo?.?,
For Nature feels not any loss,?
But I am cheerless, Rosaline!
Ah! why weil thou so lowly bred?
Why was my pride galled on to wed
Her who brought lands and gold instead
Of.thy In-art's treasure, Rosaline!
Why did I fear ti? let thee stay
To look ??ii m<? ami pass away
Forgivingly', as in it? May.
A broken flower, Rosaline!
I thought not. when my ?lugger strook)
Of.thy blue eyes ; I could noi brook
'1 he past all pleading in one look
Of utter sorrow, Rosaline !
I did nut kti?7vv when thou wert dead :
A blackbird whistling overhead
Thrilled through my brain ; I would have Hed
But ?lured not leave thee, Rosaline!
A low. low moan, a light twig stirred
By ili?: upspringing of a bird,
\ drip i;f blood,?were all I heard?
Then deathly stillness, Rosaline!
The sun rolled down, anil very soon,
Like a great fire, the awful moon
Rose, stained with blood, and then u swoon
Crept chilly o'er me, Rosaline!
The stars came out" and, one by one,
Fach angel from his silvr throne
Looked down and suvv what I had ?lone:
1 daretl iu>t bide mi?, Rosaline!
I crouched ; 1 feared thv corpse would cry
Against me to God's quiet sky,
I thought I saw thy blue lips try
To utter something, Rosaline!
I -.vititnd with n. ixmddoncd grin
To hear that voice all icy thin
?*"lide forth arid n*ll my deadly sin
To hi'll and Heaven, Rnsalinu !
But no voice carne, anil then it seemed
That if.the very corpse had screamed
The sound liki- sunshine glad had streamed
Through that dark stillness, Rosaline!
Dreams of old quiet glimmered by,
And luces loved in infancy
Game and looked on ni? mournfully)
Till my heart melted, Rosaline!
? saw my mother's dying bed,
1 heard her bl?-?s me, and 1 shed
Cool tear.??but lo ! the ghastly demi
Stared me to inndne-s. Rosaline!
Ami then amid the silent night
I screamed with horrible delight,
And in my brain an angel light
Did ????'in to crackle, Rosaline!
II i? my curse! sweet memories fall
From me like snow?and only all
Ofthat one night, like cold worms crawl
My ?liionied heart over, Rosaline !
Thine eyes are shut : they never more
Will leap thy gontle words before
To tell the secret o'er und o'er
Thou could'st not smother, Rosaline!
Thine eyes niv ?hut: they will not shine
Wuli happy teat's, or, through the vine
That bid thv casement, beam on mine,
Suufull with gladness) Rosaline!
Thy voico I never more shall hear,
*?N hieb in old limes ?lid seem so dear,
That, ere it ticinhlcd in mine car,
Mv quick heart hear?! it. Rosaline!
Would I might ?li??! 1 were a? well,
Ay, better, ai my home in Hell,
To set for aye a burning spell
'Twixt me and membrv, Rosaline!
Why wilt thou haunt me with thine eyes.
Wherein such blessed memories,
Such pitying forgiveness lie?.
Than hate more bitter, Rosaline!
Woe'.? me! 1 know that love so high
As thine, true soul) could never die,
Ami with mean eluv in ch?rch-yard li?.'?
Would God it were so, Rosaline!

*' 1 never saw any beauty in her, that's the truth,"
exclaimed one of a group of females who, lounging
around a cottage ?loor, were watching the progress
