dent of the Commercial Bank of Florida sold out bis stock
to IL Stephcn-on, and resigned. The Cashier also resigned,
leaving Stephenson in foil possession, who assumed, thoueh
without letral appointment, to act as President. Stephenson
subsequently gathered together the property h*ld by the
bank, amounting to about $115,000, in specie, bills, notes,
kc. arid absconded with iL Among the notes was one
drawn by defendant, which afterward* came into the hands
of plaintiff, who sued and recovered a verdict for $2,154, be?
ing principal and interest. A motion is made to set the ver?
dict aside on the ground that Stepbenson having feloniously
acquired said note and passed it away, the plaintiff could
not recover. Verdict for piaintifi set aside, and nonsuit .sub?
stituted, with costs.

German, was tried lor a burglary iu the 3d degree,in break?
ing into the grocery store of John Shotwcll, corner of Molt
and Walker streets, on the morning early of the 18th June
lass, with ao iutenl to steal. The prisoner was found in the
store on the Sunday morning of the burglary pretending to
he asleep; but rose and seized the watchman (Molt) by the
collar, but was secured. He had entered the store by draw
iag the staple?, and said he was druuk, thought it was a
borse stable, and had gone in there to sleep. The jury
found him guilty, add the Court sentenced him to the totale
prison for tbree years.
Another Trial vor Bfrglary.?Thomas Wray alia*
Fitzgerald, was tried for a burglary in the 3d degree, in
having, iu connection with James C. Burns and Joint Tay?
lor, burglariously entered the saddlery and trunk making
store of Little k Jones, No. 36 Sixth Avenue, on tbe night
of the 18th June last, and stealing saddlery, harness, trunks,
tools, kc worth $132 25 therefrom. Most of tbe property
was found in a small store in Houston ?trect.near Columbia:
but no property was found on the prisoner, nor was he seen
in the store at the time. As there was no evidence to im?
plicate tho prisoner in tbe crime, the jury fouHd him not
guilty. There arc other indictments against him, and he
was remanded.

Police Office.?Owner for the $1000
NOTE ?Some few days since Charles StOto alias French
Jack, was found in pessession of a $1000 bill of the Union
Bank of this City, and he was arrested on suspicion of hav?
ing stolen the same, and committed until he should give a
satisfactory explanation. The note having been advertised
for an owner, to-day Mr. John J. Clayton of Augusta, Ga.
went to Justice Parker at the Police Othce, and itulentififd
the note as his property?stating that on the 2d of last month
be drew the money for a check from the Union Rank for
$3,400, receiving three $1000 notes for it, and the rest in
smaller bills, and that last Saturday on countiug ii over,
discovered that on* of the $1000 bills v?us mis-sing, and that
it must have been taken out of his pocket v.bile asleep.?
Fi vuch Jack sleeps iu a bouse of suspicious character in
Broadway, and lives with a woman named Montgomery of
very abandoned habits. The way In which be came into
possession of the note it Is therefore not difficult to compre?

The Staeiu.ng Case.?Some two days since we men?
tioned the ease of a man named Thos. Mahan who was arrest?
ed on Sunday evening hint, for having quarreled on Staten
l>;*nd with another named Charles P. McGiven, and after?
wards on board the steamer Wave, on coining up from tiie
Island, again attacked McGiven, and stabbed him severely
with a knife in the abdomen. McGiven having been Uker.
to ihe City Hospital, remains there in a dangerous state
with his wound. To-day the Coroner and Justice Stevern
went to the Hospital ond took the affidavit of McGiven
touching tbe assault with the knife, kc. and Mahan was
then commiued in fall to answer for the subbing with intent
to kill
Attempted Extortion.?Between the 25th and 30th of
July, Mr. James G. Gregory, agent for southern Lotteries
at Jersey City, received four several anonymous letters?
ihree of them signed X. Y. 7,. and the o?ier S. Simmons,
Mating that the writer had lost $<5O0 in the purchase of lot
ten- .ickets, and that unles? Mr. Gregory paid him one
fourth of ihe amount, or $150, be would expose bira and ail
the lottery ticket dealers in this city to public approbrium
and punishment. He nt the same lime nclosed a hand bill
purporting to be addressed to the Mayor, and wo ich be
said he should lay before that functionary, and also send
copies to Boston*, Philadelphia and other cities?which
handbill purport*3 to give the name* and locations of all
the lottery dealer* iu this city. This threatening document

who not only did not submit to the extortion, but casting
about and having cood rroson to suspect two men named

and they were committed to prison.

and gcttiug somewhat sober, be missed his raonev and re?
turned, demanding it. Hardy finally gave Kelly ? $2 bill,
a sovereign and a half dollar; when Hardv caused him to
b? arrested and. he was committed to answer.
Coroner's Office.?Accidental Drowning.
--The Coroner, this morning, held an inqnest at the Alms
Hwe in the Park, en the body or Jacob Liltlpod, colored
man, a native of this State, aged 25, late residing at 443
Cherry street. The deceased, who was a steward an board
die pilot boat Fly, ami leaving hom*? at 5 o'clock on Monday
evening proceeded to Ppck slip, and in attempting to get
on board a small boat while crossing another boat, slipped
into the water, and was drowned. His body was recovered
about 20 minutes afterwards, but life was extinct- Verdict?

Information has been officially received by this Depart
tnent, that from and after the first r-lay of the present month,
the two smal beacon lights on the fort of lie Pelee, near
Cherburg, are removed; and their place is supplied by a
single fixed light, visible at the distance of nine sea miles.
The new light is in lot 49 deg 40 min and 16 sec N, and long
3 deg 55 mm 15 sec W from Paris, er 1 deg 35 min W from
Greenwich. It is distant 2,350 yards from the repeating
light of the Central fort, which bears from it N 82 W; and
5,006 yards from the fixed light of the fort of Querc;u'iviile
which'bears S 87 W from the Central tort.

life she was eeteemed and beloved by all that knew her:

that adorned and chastened it, yet he cannot take tbe mem?
