than you would suppose could be fourni there ;n these day?
of ' Belter ?Veto) Currency'?only about 8 per cent, dis?

third and fourth copy, to supply the place of those succes?
sively borrowed or begged away from them, assure us thai
this Almanac Is just what was wanted. We certainly spent
money and labor enough in its gelling up, and all but the
Portrait of Henry Clay is to our lilting, and on that we em?

Ohio.
We bave a letter from our well-informed regu?
lar correspondent ut Columbia, written on Satur?
day?only three day-* before the Election. Ho is
perfectly confident of victory, and only anxious
that the weather shall he good, so that the full
Whig majority mny be manifested in the result.
fie estimutea Corwin'? majority ai 10,000; ice
shall he satisfied with 5,000, knowing that the
Abolilioniftts will pull away .'I to 5.000. and some
of our friends refuse to vote on account of the Le?
gislative resignation, which they disapprove. It
is desirable that the weather should bo good, as n
great many in Ohio are sick of fevers, &.c, at
this senson, and can only be brought to the Polls
in good weather. As the day (Tuesday) and yes?
terday were both remarkably clear here?, we tru?t
that Tuesday was fuir in Ohio, and that nearly the
whole vote came out. If so, it is all right. A
full vote and a Whig victory are nearly ibe same
thing.
? Our correspondent wa** at Dayton, and is in
constant intercour?? and correspondence with ih?
Whig? of the whole Stale. We are a shade Jos?
.?rAnguine than he, simply because he has Iven most
familiar witb the Southern and Central portions of
the State, where the spirt of IC-JO is fully aroused.
In the Northern and Eastern Counties, especial!)
among the greut Whig Counties of the Reserve,
ihe awakening is less decided, the.vote will b?
lighter, and the Whig majority less than in ?40.
With regard to the Legislature, the Whig?
struggle at great disadvantage, owing to the ras?
cal! v Gerrymandering Apportionment of 1830
That Apportionment gave u Legislature Loco-Foco
in both branche?, in defiance of (".000 Whig ma?
jority, and thus scut Aileu to ihe I*. S. Senate.
Wo have not had a Legislature Whig in boih
branches sine?, though the Stale Ins been Whig
by .0,000. Now we feel confident of the House,
but cannot hav,? the Senate. We can only count
on l? Whig Senators as probable, but there is a
bare chance for two more, which woul I make a
tie. Alleu's tarin expires on the -tth of March
next, and we barely hnpo to see Thomas Ewing
??lected in his ?tend.
Our arrangements for receiving early returns
from this important Election are ample, and we
hope lo give enough to decide the resuit on Satur?
day morning.
Georgia?
We are of course beaten in Georgia, about as
much as last year. No Wliig expected?we had
almost said, desired?any other result. If wear*
to bave a Delegation in Congress hostile to tin
Land Distribution, hostile to even inciden tal Pro?
tection, hostile to tht? single District clause, and
voting gemenUly on party division? against the
Whig?, il is tjuite us well to have them called Lo
co-Focesas Whigs. lnfa.-t.it looks better. True,
the recent Congressional Kloction amounts to no?
thing, having Imen hold directly in defiance e: tin
law ; but it show? when- the Slat?- is, and that i?
enough. The Legislature is of a piece -with it. In
half a dozen strong Whig Counties, Loco-Focos in
whole or in part are sent to lh>< L?gislature, even
when the Whig Congressmen have a majority.
We give the vote of a few :
Countits. lrtfislaturt, '42. Congress. Governor, '41.

Mb. Clay and Abolition.?When Mr, Clay
was at Richmond, Indiana, od the 1st mit he was
waited on by t Committee of Abolitionists, headed
by Mr. Mendenhall o? Randolph County, tearing
along petition for ?he ?mancipation of his Slaves.
A number of the pj-ominent Loco-Focos of that re?
gion had signed it, hoping to embarras, him. Mr.
Ciav calmly and courteously replied to the roquent,
* taring that be deplored the existence of Slavery
ai a National evil, and would willingly unite in any
practicable measur _ for its eradication. He did
not think the course- of the Abolitionist-) calculated
toaccomplish that end ; on the contrary h?? knew
that the feeling in favor of emancipation had been
put back fifty years in Kentucky by the Abolition
excitement. The People were nearly ripe for
gradual emancipation, until the indignation excit
nd by the course of the Abolitionists absorbed every
rival feeling.
Mr. Clay, while he declinfxi a compliance with
the request thus preferred to him?he thought un?
kindly and unseasonably?and advised th?; peti?
tioner! to bestow their charity on tnose around thrm
who were in want while the objects of their sym?
pathy had abundance and were happy?desired to
maktt them a proposition. He ?aid there belonged
to him fifty Slaves, valued at $15-,000. If the
signers of this petition would raiie that sum or
give security for its payment, noi to hirn or for his
benefit, but for the benefit of the objects of their
sympathy, he would then give an answer to their
petition. Meantime he would hold it under ad?
visement.
No answer was given to this proposition.

Case of Col. Webb.?James Watson Webb,
in lir-ted for leaving the State with intent to re
c< ?ve a challenge, appeared in the Court of Ses
sioas yesterday, put in a special plea of Guilty,
and addressed the Court most ably in explanation
and juslitiuation o? the conduct for which lie stood
Htiai.ried. He very forcibly urged in his behalt
the facts that no attempt had ?ver before been
made to convict or punish any one under this pro?
vision of law, though the offences against it hud
been many and flagrant; and not los? forcibly did
he arraign that depraved public sentiment which
condemn, the man who refuses to light (rather
than be ' kicked off the side-walk/) yet call? for
ibe punishment as a felon of whoever obey?) its re
qui.itioni by fighting .' Col. W. avows that he
entered on the stage of active lift? _? a military man,
adopted the code of honor of military life, and hu*
ever adhered to it. He suggests that hia conduct
in the affuir with Marshall was not sanguinary,
that he wan forced into the fight, entered upon it.
with a fixed determination not to take his oppo?
nent's life?a d?termination proved by a letter
written by him the night before the duel to Mr.
Hoskin, hi* associate in the Courier o_ Enquirer.
The District Attorney gave notice that he
should move f?)r judgement against Col. J. YV.
Webb on Tuesday of next week. The Court then
adjourned to Monday.
Philadelphia..?We rejoice to state that, ihr
Whig*, of Philadelphia city have fully sustained
themselves against tlm combined assaults of Loco*
Foco?mii, Tyleristn, and the fierce outcry against
alleged Municipal abuses, which drove hundreds
of good Whigfl into voting against us. John M.

The polls wore not closed till after midnight, ?ind
them several were in attendance to vote in vain.
The Council Ticket of course dragged heavier
than the Mayor, and i* elected by only 525 majo?

less cry of ' Reform !' would have crtrrit*?d the city
