WK HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN.
A Syvfi.
EV MRS. Ii. J ?MKS
I.
Wt have not forgotten thai Song of our childhood,
*gTb< tame that we .uiig 'neatb the cbest-m tree's shade?
Tbe same we r?-*?lined through valley and wild wood.
When children together like children we play'd.
?Tu a Song of our School-days, dost ?iou not remember,
How ot neou-time we sat on thai stone by the door,
And look'd oh our treasures the fruit? of September,
And oiurtnut'il that Seng while dividing the store.'
II.
We bav,- not forgotten? we siiil sang together
Long after the days of our frolic? were p*_?'d,
When our hearts knew of Lile but its sunniest weather,
And its dowers were so fresh that we thought if-ey would
last.
When we stood in the gay hall? of music and dai.cmg,
When we met once again on a far loreigo shor**?
Thy intnd bent on pleasure, and mine on romancing?
We remember'd that Youth-Song, and sang it once more.
III.
We ??ave not forgotten-O, dill that Song lingers
On Memory'. dial-plate, Iivingly clear
Thouf-h Time ha. wiped out. with bis clumsy old finger-,
Full many a trace ?f the things we held dear.
Bat ihat Song of onr cbildbood-w. both bavegrown older,
And years long and changeful, have pass'd since wt met,
But our heart, Mov'd friend ! 0 our beans must be colder
Before it can teach us that Song to forget !

Better Times.?We have hnd the means of
know-in? soonetlling of the general distress and
gloom which has pervaded the ranks of the me?
chanics and manufactnrers, for it is among liiem
that our circulation extends *, and in watching their
condition and prospect-) we have had occasion to
observe bow great has been the depiession under
which they have struggled during the past season.
It is reasonable to believe that there wete at out
time ov.r two hundred thousand persona out ol
employment in the manufactories of New-York arid
New-England alone, and many of those who were
fortunate enough to be retained in business, have
found their pay inadequate to their com'.ortable
maintenance.
It is in vain to deny that business ha. rapidly
increased within the past month, whatever may
have been the'cauae of it. A better feeling pre?
vails, and the laboring classes are more generally
at work, at reasonable wages, who were generally
ununemployed and suffering in want a few weeks
since. Nor is this stato of things confined to the
laborer, for the merchant and capitalist partake
equally of the general gladness and confidence.
Neither is this feeling limited in its effects, but
prevails throughout the country. We have gath?
ered from the public journals a few facts to show
ihe progress of improvement. They afford u bet?
ter and far more satisfactory evidence to the hon?
est working man than till the speculations of party
politics.
An agent of the Port Henry Irom Company,
whose works are in Essex county, snys thut order
have been sent up to put the whole establishment in
full blast. They had recently 10UU tons of iron in
the city of New York, which is finding? ready sale
at $-7 per ton.
At the Mattawun factory -?UO hands, it is stated.
have been set to work ; and the establishment of
Mr. Tech, at Haverstraw, whi.hemploys over~00
persons, is about to go into operation.
A gentleman from New.Jersey states that more
than 40 mills which had bean closed in that State,
are tobe speedily opened.
The extensive cotton factories at Motiistown,
Pa , which had been idle for some months, were
started again a couple of weeks since; mid it is
?aid that 500 persons who wore recently unem?
ployed are now busily engaged in the factories in
Delaware county.
The Portland Advertiser says that orders have
just been received by journeymen ?1lormakers in
that vicinity, who were thrown out of employ by
the reduction of duties in the ?ate tariff, to return to
Massachusetts, where they had fot merly been em?
ployed, to engage in their former business.
A better ntate of thing*, says the Baltimore
..merican, has succeeded to the previous depres?
sion in almost every department of business. It
is now considered that a firm basis is established
upon which operations may he conducted with as?
surance as to results. The general feeling in the
community is more cheerful and lively than it ha.?
appeared to be any time within the last few years.
And a correspondent of the I'nited States Gazette,
writing from the same place, says :?Business
seems to be on the revive?confidence is again
taking the place of suspicion and distress. Our
merchants are up and doing. Tin- wlmrves begin
to present a lively appearance.
The Philadelphia Gazette says that several fac?
tories in that csty, which have long been closed,
will Immediately commence op?rations. Among
them the Globe .Mills, Leaning?-Chemical Works,
and Dr. Bergen's Glass Works. We learn also
that the Lehigh Company has been applied to for
water power to be applied to some new iron works.
A manufacture! in Wuterburv. Conn., repon.?
that he has received more orders for goods in his
line since the passage of the tariff bill than ho
had received during the whole of four months
previous.
In the iron region of New Jersey, the ore
which ha* been on the banks of the canal as quiet
as stones and almost of a? little value, has been
contracted for.
The Saugerties iron works, which, previous to
its suspension some months since, gave employ?
ment to a large number of hands, and payed out
over three thousand dol?ais monthly, are prepare?!
to resume operations.
Whatever parties may say with respect to the
cause of this state of things, it is with facts alone
.hat we have to do. and the fuet that a bettet
state of things does exist is of more consequence
to the artisan than the speculation*, of theorists.
