In a day when it is not easy to find a book of
travel* written in a spirit of candor, tbe one be?
fore us has much to recommend it. No trav-Wi
book is now deemed of any value unless in addi?
tion to what the ?\riter saw, it tells us what he
thought of it ?' every thing which he meets is not
on.v to be described but criticised. The tourist
must net only give us a pleaiant and profitable ac?
count of the country through which he journeys;
but must also discuss all its institution.??lit?
erary, poli'ical and social. If this could always
be fairly and ably done it would be well ; but the
natural tendency, at.d the actual result, of the sys?
tem, bas" been to make books o( travels merely
media for contra.ling the character of a foreign
couniiy with that of the writer's own?which is
alwny.- assumed to be the standard of perfection.
Tbui if an American travels in England and ha??
the audacity to see any thing but. starving Char?
tists, rods of iron in the hands of cast-iron
nners. worth trodden under the heel of want, fac?
tor) children crucified for the amusement of their
employer.*, and such like enormities in which the
Sea-girt Isle is presumed to abound, he is ostra?
cised at home?if perchance he is not hung up in
ciltical chains as a terror to those who may corne
after him in all time to come. On the other hand
if an Englishman ventures in the least degree to
praise tiny thing American?unless some small
cloud, n?j bigger, perchance, than a ? man's hand.'
shuts frem Jiis vision the whole firmament with
all its stats?he is assailed with boundless rancor
at hume, though, to be sure, he has apotheosis, and
thus r.metids, in the land he praise?. Bouks of
travels have thus become in a great degree?far
greater than they should be?mere bundles of pre?
judice?of national pride and national hatred of
every body but the writer's own people.
, Prof. Von Raime it's England is not of this
class, uiul therefore it deserves no small admira?
tion, ilut, eui the olher hand, it is far more com?
mon-place than we should have expected from a
German Professor, and contains f_r less instruc?
tion than we might reasonably have looked for.?
Tbe letters of which it is compose?! were evident?
ly lia.sty records of superficial impressions; and
though he attempts to criticise, he does it with no
great skill or power. As we intimated, however,
be never dogmatizes?and this negative excellence
u tho chief commendable feature of his work.?

We have frequently expressed our opinion o?
the merits of this interesting novel ?luring it- pas?
sage, in monthly parts, throng}? the pages of the
Knickerbocker,, for which it wa.- originell-,
written. It is a tale of crime, developing it-* in
ception. progress, consummation and reward with
considerable power and tlnilliag interest. It i
evidently an attempt to tread in the footsteps of
DiCKKNS, and when compared with the Lest
works of that author, as almost every reader of
both will naturally compare it, of course it falls
far below them in strength and in marks of the
highest geniu?. Still it is written with great
ability, and will be eagerly read by all admirer.? ol
this department of literature. The scene is laid
it. our own city, and the incidents ate ?-uch as
might, without any unwairantnble exaggeration,
bo supposed to have occurred among us. Il
paints the dark side of human nalure in most
vivid and repulsive colots; but no scatchei of the
human heart, no one familiar with the rivers of
guilt and wo which have their fountain there, no
one who has looked upon man and society in the
light, not of hope and of faith in the future, but of
iact and reality, will believe it overcharged.

This is one of the most important works on the

This book has been made up to sell-? but we
shall be somewhat disappointed if even this low
aim be reached. That there is iniquity of all pos?

under the Mormon cloak, we have no doubt?and
we have as little that Gen. Bennett is fully com?

nothing mote than a collection of all th*? newspa?
per trash about the Mormons that has been pub?

fourths of it is too stupid and heavy .ver to be
rea?! by any body ; and the other part is too dis?

manner of telling it. for any decent man to look at.
[t is in every respect a wretched attempt at book

Practical .Hornmni.
We announced in our last article our determi
tion to proceed t?j realize in practice, as early
i possible, the giand theory o? Association, giv. r
I the world by Chahlf.s Fo.ri__r ; we believe t
j the principles of Association havebecom? s?wi !
i disseminated, and accepted by so ii.an. through ?
effort:* in The Tribune and other liberal journ
which have opened their columns to us. that
practical demonstration will be bailed with".hi
pleasure by thousands, and that through u.r ??*-:
tion* cf our friends throughout the Country, t
great enterprize will be commenced.?that a P.
lau:?; or Association will be established. v\bicb v
prove to the world the practicability of union t
combination among men, cf Attractive Induit
and of the social elevation of all. The first As
ciation will show to the world that with its i
men-e economies.?the unity of interests o
action among its members, who bring to bear
the pro-.cut ion of every branch of Industiy all ii
S'.ience. Skill and Experience can effect, the
tracti". e Labor of the Group- and Series, its not'i
and perfect system of practical and scientific Ei
cation, its cultivation and encouragement of .
and S'tience, and all that elevates and retines l
human mind and heart,?we say it will show
the world, by these and other means of impro
menr, that Man was not destined to live upon t
earth, steeped in poverty and s.lrt.hnes? and
war with his fellow man, but that he was cre-.t
to lead upon it a high existence, blessed w
abundant-*-, free frem care, and at peace with
Mankind.
One Association will demonstrate that th?.
?rreat ends can be attained when Man lives acco
ing to his nature and organizes his social relatir
in conformity with the immutable laws of Gi
which the scientific discoveries of Fourier have i
vealed to us. The first Association will not i cali
all the advantages we expect later from the s;
tern, but it will increase pi eduction greatly, pa*
good interest, upon th?. Capital inve.ted, 6-CU
Attractive Industrial Occupations and plcasf
Social Relation? (o those who enter it, and pi
duce harmony of interests and feelings.
The Public will 3oun be presented with a speci
plan of operations, and proposals to subscribe re t|
Stock, and to commence the founding ol the fit
Phalanx in the I'nited States.
The Four-Fold I>nrknr??? into tyhicli tl
Wot III ia Pi.in girt.
Fourier remarks, in hi*? ' .Treatise on Associ
tion,1 (p!?ge 145) that th? world i-i plunged in
four-fold Darkness :
" Int. In Social Darkness, from ignorance of
a true System of Society.
" 2d. In Dogmatical Darkness, from the circle
error in which our. false controveisial and unc.rta
BCtences?political,morn 1 and philosophical?mov
" 3d. In Spiritual Darkness, from th?? fa I e at
perverted development of tl??-? Pn-ision?.
"iih. PRINCIPALAND LEADING DAR!
NESS,from an ignorance of the relation which ?
jsts between Man, God and the Universe.'*'
The three first characters are easily understou?
the latt?*r reqnires Borne explanation. It is vet
certain that Man is ignorant of the Destiny a
signed t?> him by (-???.I upon this earth, ?in?! ol tli
spheres t-> which lie goe-? Rfter death und the fi
ture function there reserved him. The proof ?
this is that the most contradictory theories exi?
upon the subject.
As regards Man's terre-trial Destiny, ho wr
placed upon the earth .as il? Ovkrsk_r?? to ?i
pervise if and th*- creations upon ir, tu cultivai?
enibrllish and perfect it in every way, to devebjp
its varied material resources and harmonies, a?<
nmke it a beautiful terrestrial abode and the seen
of a high spiritual development und existence.
If Man does not fulfil his Destiny u? Oterseei
of the Globe, he i- not in material Unity with God
to arrive at a state of at-one-ment with Him. he mus
di-' over his Destiny and organize a Society whi?
will enable him to fulfil ir. H? now neither know
hi- Destiny, nur does he perform it; he consequent!
is in darknes?. as regards his relation to the planet
which is a part of ths Universe, and to God as re
lues to the teirestrial function which his Creot?.?
requires ol him.
False Opinion?? Relating to Aisocintioc
It is supposed by many that the Product of th?
labor of the members of an Association will b<
put into a common stock, out of which all will re
ceive an equal share?the idle as well as the ae
live. This is a great error as we will show by ?
practical illustration.
Suppose a dozen persons in an Associatior
foim a Group and unite fur the purpose of raising
fruit or wheat, or manufacturing hats ; the fruit >.?i
wheat raised or the hats manufactured will be sol?!
by the Association at the m??st favorable rates and
fur a small commission of ? or .-f per 100.
Suppose the sales of wheat \ield ?6 000, th"
Group of wheat-growers will receive ir,?and n
ether Group or individual in the Association will
reo ive any part of it. The members of the Group
of wheat-growers will receive the sum and will
divide it equitably among themselves according ??_.
they have labored. If one member has been ab?
sent, fjr example, one-eijhth of the working time
of the Group?one-eighth ?.'.ill be dr?du.*te?l from
his share ; if another has beim ab*ent one quarter
ol the time, a quarter will be deducted from his
-hare.
Tliijs each Group will receive th?? \alue of its
labor, and a separate account will be kppt with
each Group. The Association will pay the Groups,
and the members of each Group will divide the
amount among themselves upon ju**t principles.
A person can belong to several Groups, and be
engaged at some seasons in Agricultural, and at
others in Manufacturing or other pursuits. If be
takes part in no Group and dues not wurk, he will
receive no pay, and be must then live upou the
interest pf his Capita), invested in the Slock of
the Association. If he belong* to a Group which
produces a great deal and is profitable, he will re?
ceive more than if he belongs to a Group which
produces less, and is not so profitable.
The members of an Association can join such
Groups as they wish, consulting their tastes in the
choice of occupations. No one will lie required
to work at branches which he d?_?es not like, nor
will any one point out to others their pursuits. No
mas-tars, no employers will exist in Association:
people will be attracted to Industry, not driven
i to it. Perfect Liberty in every respect will exist.
