ham L. Earle and E. A. Livermore, commissioners under
tbe act paused on June 13, 1875, commonly known as
the Bapld Transit Act, for the purpose of laying out a
route or routes for raliway companies to construot and
operate traction street on aorface railways In this city.
Mr. 8mlth was formerly the president ot
the Commercial Mutual Insurance Company sad
ls well known In business circles. Mr. Byrd ls a mer?
chant doing business at No. 82 Franklln-st. Mr. Stewart
has served two terms In Congress and was for a short
time a Park Commissioner; he resigned tbls position.
Mr. Earle was deputy controller under Andrew ll
Green, and has for several years boen connected with
mining enterprises. Ur. Livermore ls , a well knows
member of tho Produce Exchange.
The appointment was made by the Mayor on a petition
presented by James Gamble, general manager of the
National Cable Railway Company. The petition ts
signed bv H. B. Claflin, A. B. Tappcn, F. li. Thurber,
Robert Sewell, Homer Morgan, John A. Voorhls,
Thomas I). Adams, F. D. Moulton, John Foley
and more than 100 others. It sets forth various ad.
vantages claimed for the cablo system, and says tbst
there ls urgent need for this form of rapid transit In this
city on many convenient routes legally open to Its In?
troduction ; tLat Its economy of construction, operation
nnd maintenance would enable lt to carry passenger* at
any denlrable rate of speed over long or short distances
for a tlvo-cent fare; and that tho capacity of the ele?
