rhanges tlieac Illty years of inveiiticn und dis?
covery liftvc mu'lf in lite ns,.cct uf civilizetl
society. In a pro.f?t??ry chapter of the present
volume lie docs reject upon tlie contrusts which be

eccma to beve liecn most ntl motel by what rc
mr-in-d un-Jltrvd: nnd he rr.tnli.cd about England,
not, morcli/ing upon profcTot-?. but happy with lite
as lie found it. His obscrvrtV'ons are olton shrewd
nnd novel. It is nlwe.ys interesting to entfern the
play of his nimble intellect and the direction of
lila sober sympathies. But he never bores us with
improving lemarkf*. He chats nbout the pleas-nt
friends whom he me.de, the hospitalities that were
hea'ied upon him, the festivals, oercmonics end
other entertaining affairs of which ho was a
privileged witness, and generally about the de
licbtful time which bl end his daughter both had
during tlicir liundrcd days' vacation. He mokes
his book out of his random recollections and her
diary; and it is a book not bo much about
"Europe" as about "ourselves." This is just ?8
the Hioctor's friends-that is to say, all of us?
would have it. We can rc.id aliout English scenery
and shows and manners in a score of good books;
what we want here is to know how the universal
American favorite passed his time in a country
where he is almost as popular as he is at home.
As we read the ingenious narrative we can fancy
ourselves among the neighbors and intimates who
meet by his etudy-ilre to welcome his return and
to listen to the story of hie experiences. He tells
.us about the eca-voyage and his asthma, the com?
forts provided lor blm by thoughtful friends, the
cordial greetings thnt awniteii him at Liverpool,
tlie search for London lodgings, the dinners und
receptions with their little personal adventures,
the tours sight-r-eeing and the impressions that
they made, tlie kind of razor best for travellers'
use, the imposing process of conferring honorary
degrees at Oxford and Edinburgh, the defects of
English bread, a visit to Tennyson, and a day at
the Derby as the guest of the Prince of Wales.
He declares that there is no disguise in his egoism.
I>o, there is none: but neither is there vanity,
affectation or offence. Instead of complaining
that hie reminiscences are too subjective, we feel
complimented by his confidences; and we lay
down the least artificial and most genial of his
books liking him bitter than ever.
