600. The increase was chiefly in legal tender
UOlsa. but that in specie was more than
*"l.'v'",000. As Treasury payments have been
?ads in gold, this increase was rather smaller
than it was expected to be. The gain in cur
reaey was in full consonance with the known
movements of money. The result was not sur>
prlalng therefore, but the further accumula?
tion in reserves, which was in itself an un
Iavorable feature of the statement, was offset
partially by an expansion of loans by $:;.408,00'J.
In the last three weeks deposits have Increased
pearly $28,000,000, while loans have gained less
than $3,000,000. The sUgbest increase in this
)i--ui is reassuring because it indieates a partial
restoration of confidence. Tlie statement was
not wholly consistent, because the Increase in
deposits was smaller by over JSJO.000 than the
Diner changes demanded. The result of all the
?change-s was a further gain of 15,364,TOO in the

THE WEEK IN WALL BTREET.
Speculation in stocks last wreck was <x
11-nii-iy variable. Prices varied about from
day t.. day according to the operatk ns ?.f trad*
irs and professional speculator-. Tbs volume
of business was a trifle mora than it was iti
th" preceding week, bul it was unevenly dis?
tributed. The transactions in American Sugar
Relining stock were nearly s quarter of the
total business, and in only two other Btocks,
st. raul and Oeneral Electric did the transac?
tions exceed 100,000 shares. The business in
the three Btocks eras nearly one-half of the
total. In ths last days nf the week thc market
displayed a strong tendency to move upward,
but Sugar Refining lost in the week i per
cent, and General Electric l's per ci nt These
wire the most noteworthy exceptions, and
otherwise final variation! were advances of
from ]-s per cent ia Reading lo 6*4 In North?

sids the ranks of professional operators. For
stocks of assured standing there Mas a tiulel
demand by Investors, who desired ; > w
profitable employment for tin lr idle funds. The
supply of desirable bonds has become ex?
tremely limited, and Investors evidently are
turning their nttentidn I i stocks of the highest
grade.

profits of Buger refining would necessarily bs

opposite argument was urged bi behalf of thu
stock. An increase In tho tax on spirits would
not be perceptibly felt, and certainly it would
not be wholly unpopular. Th<* revenue would

production of illicit distillers, although lt might

The movements in lin* Ri-neral list were 'lue
principally to the easy rates foi- mom y and to

market. Thc short inter-st had become so
larere that the leaders of the bear faction be?

alarmed. The cviden* Improvement In our
branches of business, the repoits of rall;.,id
earnings, which in the main were satisfactory.
and the constant growth of confidence every?
where In the country, were elements In the
speculative problem which naturally tended to
an advance in prices. Pofetgn commerce shows
a large merchandise balance in favor of this
country. Exports continue to lnnre'v ex.1
imports, and in the last week there has been
no counter movement of Becuritiee, While
London has apparently been doing little in
this marker, European Interest m American se?
curities shows signs of gradual revival, and
purchases of bonds, and perhaps of s'oc-ks, even
If small, have undoubtedly been larger than
the subs for foreign account An Indication of
the improvement In tho mercantile situation
was afforded by the lar?e auction sale of cotton
goods on Wednesday, winn 11,000 pack-ares,
valued at about tt.tM.tSW, were sold. The
prices obtained were unexpectedly high, and
the success of the sale haft had an excellent
effect, not only on the tone of the drygoods
market, but Indirectly on the Stock Exchange
markets.
One of the incidents of thc week WM tbs
strike op the Lehigh Valley Railroad, whi.-h at
first created no little uneaainesa Tie- stock
ls not dealt in nt the stock Exchange, and,
moreover, has been Closely held for many yens.
The other anthracite coal Stocks Were ii a
affected adversely, because lt was Urged that If
the Lehigh Valley Company should be tied Up
for a nhort time the other companies would de?
rive an advantage by the restriction caused
by the strike. An occurrence of much linn"
Importance was the selection of a committee
to formulate a plan for the reorganisation of
the i'nlon Pacific. Railroad. Of courae. any
plan must take Into consideration nn adjust?
ment of the debt to the Oovernment, and on
that point Congress has sole authority. The
market closed a trifle below the highest flgures
for the week, but In npltc of the Btlgbt reaction
the general sentiment was hopeful and
courageoua
Following is the usual table, Rlvinf; the num?
ber of shares sold of all stocks, the highest,
lowest, and the final prices of the week, to
pether with the final prices of ii week nco, pre?
fixed by the average prices of November 19,
