long distance line through a \Vall-?t. office and an
office In the Monadnock Mock, Chicago, where a

situation were assembled. The present Hell tele?
phone and the n^w magneto-telephone were used al?
ternately, and tba* results were decidedly In favor
of the new tel*-phone, which showed remarkabl?
clearness. A number of experts who were present
pronounced the results obtained from the magneto
instrument to be highly taatlsfact'.ry.
The new telephone tried last night appeared to
the experts present to meet almost all of the ra>
qulrements sought for by those who have been try?
ing to do away with batteries. Induction colls and
variable resistance contacts, which are troublesome
and costly In the pre^ont system. The patents up..n
the magneto-telephone expired on .Innuary 30; there?
fore the new telephone ls not affected hy any exiting
patents of the Hell company. The new magneto
telephone ls controlled hy the Western Telephone
