THE MONETARY SITUATION.
The local m.>ney markets were quiet, with a
lupplT of funds ln the call and time loan branch
ol the mark.t greater than the demand. The
ofitring of f "reign money here was ln liberal
amounts for short periods, but the demand was
not heavy enough to absorr? It r-11. while the
competition from home lenders, who were willing
to lend at the same rat*? generally 4 per cent -
prevented considerable foreign money from be?
ing placed. Money on call lent at 3 and 4 per
cent, with the greater part of the business at
from 3 to l)i per cent. Hanks and trust com?
panies quoted 34 per cent their minimum. Time
monev was quoted at 4 per cent fir thirty to,
ninety davs. 4?2 per .ent for four to five months,
and 4ty*55 per cent for six months and longer
periods. There was an improvement In the com?
mercial paper business as fer as the demand was
r-ncerned, but there was no pressure of offer?
ings of first-class name*?. The Inquiry for good
paper showed improvement, and customers of
banks who reijulreil accommodation found no
<i fflcultv In obtaining it. Por the best name? the
p-evaillng rate was 6 per cent, with a few trans
ttUoas at ?H per rent and higher rates for
names not quite so well known. In England the
Bank of England made no chsnge In Its mini?
mum rate of discount, which remalr^d at ? per
tent. Discounts of elxty to ninety-day bank
tills In London ruled at 9-18 of 1 per cent. The
r.p?n market tate In Paris was 1*4 per cent, and
in Berlin and FnankfoT 2% per cent. The Bank
ot England lott in the w*ek ?184.539 bullion Snd
held at th? close f46.S7g.156.
The foreign exchange market ruled firm until
FrlJay, when the absence of any demand from
remitter? caused a frlhng off In rates of about
V. per cent. The present rates fur sterling ex?
change do not permit of a profit t? exporting
fold, and the fact that so much foreign money
U landing in this market will probably keep
fold exports down to a minimum, for a time, at
least. The amount sent out last week was $1,
300,000 for Germany on a special transaction.
There is a great scarcity of commercial bills in
the market.
Posted rates closed the week at 84 ????12ft$4 89
arid $4"94'g$4 90. f.r l'.ng; and short sterilii? r?
?pectlvely. Closing rates for actual business
