Wednesday, November 4-p. in.
All departments of Vail ?Street buslntrsj re?
flected In Increased activity to-dny th?- Fiir??-i i>
sound-money victory won by UkB honesty ami
common sense of the. American people. The
financial community and Its inulitfotd eoanao
tlons have been relieved of a mighty weicht
of doubt and uneasiness, and for the first time
in many months, in fact since 1898, trad?; hu?
been placed on a dear track where the future
la not eo dim that restrictions and narrow
limita will have to bound every line of work.
The integrity of the f?overnment haa l???n
preserved and the currency will not he ruined
as proposed by Mr. Bryan. All Interests in the
business world feel that the prospe.-ts en?
courage expansion in the various departments
of industrial activity, and from now on they
believe that there will 1>* a gradual bvlldlng?
up process in every business undi-rtaklng In
the country An increased demand for money
this morning indicated the beginning of trade
development, and especially, as this demand
was so notably Improved In the commercial
paper market. Time money was lending and
offering at 0 per cent for all periodi. and m'-r
cantlle offerlnga of the hlghea?. grade were
quoted at (Jin per cent. Contrary to Iba pre?
dictions of some, particularly In the London
banking communit>, the sterling tzchanga
market did not advance on the result, of Uta
sound-money victory, an?! it Is not at a!; proba.?
ble, for the present at least, that t(l?-aH<d fund?
and hoarded holding*, will move toward tbe
other sld*-. More gold was engaged to-day at
the Bank of England for export to this country
In settlement of trad.- obligations, and It Is
Interesting to note that the local premium on
the metal disappeared this morning and that
the eager and timid peopl? who bought gold
last week tried without success tu dispose <>f
their holdings to day The result of the gold
hoarding movement will doubtless be reflected
In increases In the specie holdings of Clearing
House banks and a gradual rise in the Treas?
ury's gold reserve. Silver bullion was weak and
lower and wheat was higher.
The security market was active in all deport?
ments, atocka, railway, miscellaneous and Oov?
eminent bonds all closing at substantial net a?l
vances on a large volume of business. Opening
prices in stocks were at advances from Mon?
day's closing of l?7?,i per cent, and Biter a
ahort boom they began to fall, as pronta were
taken, and the rush of orders from the outside
afforded well-loaded operators a chance to un?
load on the newcomers. There was a tre?
mendous amount of this kind of selling, and
speculative excitement ran high throughout th?
dav. Operations by arbitrage house? were large,
and the transactions made through house?? which
kept open all night In order to take advantage
of the London market resulted In heavy selling
for profits. Throughout the day the demand foi
stocks was good; also for railway and Oovern
ment bonds, and after the flr.t reaction In
prices, rallies succeeded, closing prices gi\inK
net gains among the chief active stocks of 1:1
3^4 per cent. The London market was atrong
and higher, with "Americans" up 1-84 per c?-nt.
and the general speculative and Investment
sentiment showing extrenely happy feelings
over the McKinley victory. The London money
market was not affected, and it was reported In
some London money circle? that further large
shipments of gold from the Bank of England to
the United States were expected. The actual
