RELIGION9 OF PRIMITTVE TBrOTLBB. mBf
Daniel G. Brlnton. Profeaanr of Archa?logT
and LlnguUtlca ln the I'nlvershy of Ppnna>i
vania. Octavo, pp. 264. O. P. Putnam a Pons.
Theae lectur?fl wera glven ln half a dozen
cltles under the ausplcee of the Amerlcan Com?
mlttee for Leotures on the Hlstory of Reilglons.
To the same eommittee wa owe Canon Cheyne'a
lectures on "Rellgloufi Thought and Llfe Among
the Hebrewa in Post-Exllic Daya." From the
Interestlng detaiis ln whlch Dr. Rrlnton'a leet
ures nhound we tntn to his maln concluslons.
Thr wondcrful slmllarity of the myths and culta
of early men between whom wlde oceans roll re
veais the unlty of the mlnd and the eameness of
Ita way of working upon common materlals.
Rcllrrlons are gen.-rated ln the BUb-consclous
atratum of our nature. The Idea of the auper
human is developed from the unconscloua hu
man powers of mlnd. Here Is "tbe true eotirce
of the roneeption of the Dlvlne." The one unl
vcrsal trait of endless forms of rellglous ex
PfaaalOtl la faith ln mlnd, ln the supersensuouB.
as the ultimate BOtUTCO of all forca. all llfe, all
belng. ar.d that man ls ln communlcation wlth It.
Dr. Brlnton has occaslon to corrert a varlety
of miseonceptlonB. as that some eavage trlbea
are destltute ef roligion. that some worship in
anlmate objects without roference to any Bpirit
or llfe concelved as Inhabltlng them. that death
la an object of terror to prlmttlvo men, that the
aarllest marnage waa mere promlsculty, etc.
It seems to us that he hlmself needa correctlon
ln nn important polnt. He declares there la an
"irreconcilable confltct" between aclence and re
Ugion. beeanae "they arlse ln totally dlfferent
tractfl of the human mlnd. sclenco from the con
BgeJona, rellgjloa from the ertib- or unconscloua, ln
telllgence. Therefore, there ls no common meae
ure between them." But evldently thls reason
Ing doea not hold except upon tha mero as
aumptlon that these dlfferent tracta of our
nature are themeelvea so lncoherent or contra
dictory that thelr producta must be ao. Dr.
Brlnton should have distlngulshed here, aa he
has elsewhere. between religlon and theology.
Ex-Presldent Whlte of Cornell. ln hla "Hlstory
of the Warfare of Sclence wlth Theology." haa
made a truer statement: "Sclence, though lt has
?vidently conquered dogmatio theology, based
on Blblleal textB and anciant modes of thought,
wlll go hand ln hand with religlon."
T'ndoubtedly, as Dr. Brlnton saye, the power
termc'd "Inspiratlon" waa. llke religlon. orlgl
nally of a psychlcal character akln to what la
ealled "possesslon." It la equally eertaln that
ln each the psychlcal haa developed Into the
moral. Between the lnsplratlonal character of a
trance-speaker and that of a preacher of rlght
eousness there ls a vast dlfference. But Dr.
Brlnton eees no dlfference between the inspira?
tlon Of "evangellsts and Indlan medlclne-men."
Furthermore, the goal of rellgloua progress Is
represented aa reached "when tho Idea, no longer
merged ln the ldeal, atanda by Itself aa the
reccKirized guido of consclous effort." apart
from any eonception of "belng a personallty."
We doubt very much whether an idea of lnflnlte
goodness wlll ever be able to stand by Itself
without eupport ln the ldeal of a belng who ia
Inflnitely good, any better than an adjeetive ls
able to go alone without a Bubstantlve to sup
port lt. In short, whlle Dr. Brinton ls an ad
mlrable explorer. he la much lesa admlrable as a
philosopher.

A FAMOUS DUEL.
THE TE.MPER OF THE FTETH LORD
BYRON'.
Not many people ln thla generatlon have
heard or read the details of the quarrel between
the fitth Lord Byron and hla nelghbor, Mr.
Chaworth?a quarrel which waa to have Ita
effect. fifty yeara later, upon one of the greateat
of English poets. "Thc Argosy" notcs that thla
quarrel. a sllly and groundlesa one, took place
ln January, 1765:
A club of Nottlr.ghamshlre gentlemen of rar.k
and fortune had met as they usually did?one
evenlng a week?to dine together at the Star
and Oaiter Tavern. Pall Mall. Everything went
off as usual. go .d-humoredly. but about 7 o'clock
a dlspute an.se whether Lord Byron, who took
no care of his game. or Mr. Chaworth, who was
a strict preserver, had most on thelr manor.
Mr. Chaworth remarked that he belleved that
there was not a hare ln that part of the coun?
try whlch was not elther preaervefl by hlmself
or Slr Charlea Bedley. on this I.ord Byron. who
was a most apltefu] and unamiable person,
offered a wager of ?100 that he had more gamo
on his estate than his nelghbor in the country,
Mr. Chaworth, had r,n his. The wager was ac?
cepted, and thc? particulara duly recorded ln
black and whlte. Rhortly after thla Slr Charlea
Bedley s manors were mentloned, whereupon
Lord Byron exclalmcd ln some heat:
"Slr Charlea Sedley's manors? WheTO are
they'"
"Why, Hocknel and Nuttal," replled Mr. Cha?
worth; "the latter was purchaaed by hlB famlly
from one ef my anceatora."
Lord Byron did not dlsputo Nuttal. but he
clalmed Hocknel as hla own.
"In thr.t case," answered Mr. Chaworth, "lf
Tour Lordship requires satiafactlon, why, Slr
Charles llvea in Dean-st.. and you know whero
to rind me ln Berheley-et.**
Whether thls was a real dlspute or only uscd
as u tneans of glvlng vent to angry feellng seema
somewbat doubtful, though lt ls possible that
Chaworth used the word "eatlsfactlon" wlth a
double meanlng, yet the company apprehended
no evll consequencc-B when they parted at 8
o'clock.
Lord Byron, however. stepped Into an empty
chamber and aent the "drawer" after Mr. Cha?
worth, who was on his way downstalrs, to re
quest a few mlnutes' prlvate convc rsatlon wlth
that unfortunate gentleman. Mr. chaworth,
who was, lt is sald, a most amlahle character,
and not one likely to nouiiah any 111-feeling. lrn
mediately retraced his steps and went to the
room where Lord Bvmn was awaltlng him. It
was a small apart ment, and llghted only by tha
dim light of n t allow candle and the dylng em
bers of a dull fire. f~m Mr. Chaworth enterlng
the room Byron a?ked him whether he was to
have "recou'rse to Sir <"har)e8 Sedley to aecount
for the business of the game an 1 ihe disputed
lordship of the manor, or to hlmself?"
' "To tne, my lord. lf you wlsh," was the reply
ln a BOmewbat surprised tone. "And I tblnk lf
you have anylhlng 10 *ay it would be best to
ahut tha door. '.c-flt we BhOUld be overh.-ard."
gpaaklng ihus. Mr. Chaworth moved on one
adde to effe< t this objert, hut upon turnlng
round he obeerved, to his nstonishrnent, that
Lord Byron was Juat behtnd him with hla aword
half drawn, and heard him. at the same Instant,
cal! out "Drawl"
There araa nothinsr for lt but for Mr. Cha?
worth to draw his own aword in return. an'l do
his best to defend hlmaelf in his Boaaewhat
awkward poaltloa by thc door. whlch he did.
He was an excellent fencer, but unfortunatc-iy
mad? n thrust entangllng his BWOrd In the
weJateoal of his antagontat, whereupon Lord
Byron ahortened his weapon and lr.fllct?d a
fatal wcund. Mr Chaworth was carried to his
house in Berkeley-at. and eurvlved but a few
hours. though he was able to dlctate his will
and a lettar to his mother, and make a com?
munlcation to his near relative, a Mr. Levlngo,
which appearB to have eoniewhat Impugned the
honor of Lord Byron.
"Good heavena!" crled the dvlng man, 'that I
ahould have Li-en BUCh a fool as to fight ln the
dark. 111s lordship did not lntend tlghting when
wa went Into the room. but seelng me up by the
door he thought he had me at an advantage,
and thus i ncountered me. I dle as a man of
honor. but Byron has done hlmself no good
by it."
Hoaaee Walpole says that ha left hehlnd hlm
a paper Ln Whlch he allowed it was ii fuir du.-l.
Mr. Chaworth di'-d at 9 o'clo. k in the mornlng,
ln his fortieth year. and a bachelor. Lord Byron
was trled for murder before his paera at Weat*
mlnsttr Hall on Aprll W and 17 folloaaing. Me
made a plaln and honorable defence, denylng
wlth Indlgnatlon the Inslnuatlons made agalnst
hla fairn?-ss and honor. On the conclusion of
hla addresB the lordfl declared Lord Byron to
be gullty of "manslau?hter" only, whereupon
his lordship, clalming the prlvlleges of the peer
age aa regulated in the flrst of Kdward VI, was
dlacharged upon paymt-nt of the usual feea. By
the atatute before mentloned, peers in all eaaea
where the beneflt of clergy Is allowed were dls
mlssed without burninj- ln hand, loss of ln
heritance or corruptlon of blood. Lord Byron,
who haa come down t<> poaterlty aa "the bad
Lord Byron," aurvlved his trlal three-and-thlrty
yeara, dylng ln 1798, when the famlly honors
devolved upon hla grandnephew George?the
poet?aon of Captaln Byron. tha wjj[d and reck-.
leaa prodlgal who marrled the Soottlsh helress,
Mlsa Gordon.
Thla Lord Byron. aa we know well. gf''- e a
lustre to hla tarnlshed name which had ne\?r
before belonged to lt. The memory of the ceie
brated and fatal duel dld not dle out wlth the
old lord. but canaed a bltter feud between tna
nelghborlng famillea of Byron and ChawoTth.
If thla du*?l had never taken place lt 1a pC8H

would have turned Into hpnlthW and hnppt'-r
