THE DAY'S OPERATIONS IN STOCKS. There was a further contraction In the volume of business in yesterday's stock market, total dealings amounting: to only 331,736 shares, as compared with about 900.000 a. week ago. Al though ■ prices exhibited considerable irregulari ty, there were about as many net gains as losses at the close, with strikingly favorable changes in Manhattan, which pained nearly 3 points; American Smelting, Brooklyn Rapid Transit and New- York Central. The only im portant losses in the active list were made by Rock Island. Colorado Fuel and Iron, and St. Louis and San Francisco, On a sale of one hundred shares. Pullman stock lost 7% points. New-York Dock, common and preferred, on dealings of a few hundred shares, advanced 2 and .'I 1 - points, respectively. American Grass Twine, also on small dealings, advanced IVb nts. The day's limited business was made up almost entirely of the operations of the trading element, and as a consequence there was no especial significance in the course of prices. Traders expected a bad bank state ment, and bear sentiment was encouraged on the strength of early predictions regarding the probable showing. According to the known movement of money, the local banks have lost over $2,000,000 in cash this week. Rock Island directors deferred the company's capital readjustment plan on the basis of an expected expansion in the company's business in the next few years. It is pointed out that the road is now a system of seven thousand miles, with an additional one thousand miles in course of construction, as against 3,900 miles in 1000, and that the growth of population and indus tries in the company's territory promises to con tinue at the current rapid rate. It is also point ed out by the directors that, based on a mileage of seven thousand miles, the new Rock Island capitalization will represent $47,400 a mile, as against $47,500 a mile for Burlington, $50,000 for Atcbison. $03,000 for Southern Pacific. $81. 267 for Union Pacific and fia*2Ss for Chicago and Alton. The directors are confident that the plan will work out satisfactorily, and prove to he wholly for the best interests of the stock- Th«» day of big railway deals evidently is not over It is believed In many quarters that sev eral" plans for concentrating railway control are held in abeyance pending the settl<?ment of the Northern Securities caee, while it is thought likely that important transactions not depend in^ on the Northern Securities decision will soon develop. The Rock Island plan has not strengthened the public appetite for stocks, bnt if the proposed arrangement goes through without a hitch, sentiment will doubtless be come more optimistic. There is enough in the general situation outside of Wall Street to en courage bull enthusiasm, and if nothing happens to the corn crop stocks will doubtless be in demand before the end of the month. It is understood that the rumor is without foundation. TIME FOB DEPOSIT EXTENDED. When a few weeks ago the Louisville and Nash ville Railroad Company and the Southern Railway Company acquired a majority of the $10^.000 com mon and J5.0W.000 preferred stock of the Chicago. Indianapolis and Louisville Railway Company Monon) payment to be made In the Jo»nt bonds of th- purchasing roads at par. the elect on was per mitted the Monon shareholders to receive cask In lieu of 60 per cent of the par amount of the bonds to be given them In exchange for their respective stock holdings The time within which this choice could be exercised by the stockholders expired on July 31 and will not he extended: but the time for depositing stock, to be exchange* for bonds only, has been extended to August 31. J. P. Morgan & Co the depositaries, announced yesterday that holders of 7: per cent of the preferred and 92»A per cent of the common had deposited their holdings op to and including July 31. The firm has issued notices to the merrbers of the Motion purchasing syndicate, advising them that all the bonds re ceived by the syndicate have been sold, the cash required for payments to depositing stockholders of the Monon thus having been provided, no call upon the syndicate subscribers being neces « .ry. ; The nrm sold the bonds yesterday, about J5.800.000 par value, the price obtained being 96 and Interest. CONDITION OF TRADE. "Dun's Review" snys: V check to the rHlng prices of stock and grain is not an unfavorable sign, for tne tlrst time in the history of the stock mnrk.-t. mil way securill.-s averaged above $U4 for the sixty most active shares, and storks were being purchased with bor rowed money, regardless of diminishing bank re serves and gold exports. Manipulated prices for July grain options wore not conducive to domestic consumption or shipments abroad, and the lower quotations now prevailing will have a salutary ef fect on legitimate trade Aside from heavy rains In TVxa*. the Week's crop sews Is encouraging. Manufacturing plants are w.-il occupied, as a rule iron and Ht.-ol leading, followed by t.-xtil.'s and footwear. Fuel scarcity l.« stin causing delay. :il though coke ovens are surpassing ill previous fix are* of output, and bituminous mines are vigor ously operated. Efforts to resume anthracite mining precipitated violence and bloodshed, and ;ift.-r three months of Idleness Daftness is pn>a trated throughout the Imr.l <--..-t! region. At most points, however, retail trade Is active, and prepara tions continue for heavy fall sales, while spring lint s are opened with good result*. Bank exchanges at Ntw-Vork for the week were 29.8 p«-r cent large than s year ago ami 44 S per cent greater than those of USB. while at other leading cities there wore grdns of 15.3 and 25.2 per ct-nt respectively. Rail w.iv earnings thus far available for July show a K.-it'n of 3.3 per cent over 1901 and 30.8 per cent over 190). "Bradstreef?" says: Trade Is quiet, while attention Is concentrated on crop and industrial developments. Generally lower prices for fami products point to the former being largely favorable, though the passing of the July period of manipulation is a weakening influence. As for some time nast. the future surpasses the present in the matter of trade feature. Though weather conditions of late have been more favor able, effects of earlier backward weather have not been effaced or repaired. Retailers' stocks, while leduced by timely ! .ire.'in sales In some instances, have not Wen profitably handled. As for the fall and winter outlook, however, the best Is predicted. Crop conditions are not noticeably Impaired, though excess of moisture is still a subject of com plaint In som>- portions of the cotton and grain belt, and drouth troubles other parts of the South. In industrial affair? the outlook is certainly satis factory. The iron and steel situation is still largely a stroiv one, but Isolated examples of weakness are In sight Th«» coal strike Is conceded to be In Its last singes, though the final ending may be long drawn out. The railway situation is one of the best In years and the outlook as to tonnage is a flattering one. marred only by the prospect of car shortages later on reducing or curtailing In dustrial operations. Fiscal year earnings returns are exceptionally good, and it Is probable that, taken as a whole, the railway earnings for the half year will exceed IWI .I. spite reduced anthra cite coal carriers' earnings. Clearing compari son-- are more favorable than earlier In the year, and July totals show gains on list year. Failures are down to a midsummer minimum. O I TS WE RECURITI EB.
