tftf: DAY'S operations tn STOCKS.
Dealings in stocks w^re extremely limited, and
with the exception of the trading in Atchlson.
Manhattan. Rock Island. Pennsylvania. Pressed
Steel Car. St. Louis and San Francisco, South
cm Pacific and Southern Railway, there was no
business of Importance. A? a rule, prices were
- lrrerular. with more net losses than gains at
the close. Traders' expectations of an unfavor
able bank statement were fulfilled, a/: reserve
above legal requirements declined $1,764,275 to
f13.738.120. Cash declined $502,200. as against
a decrease of over $2,000,000. as estimated on
Friday from the known movement of money in
the week. Loans increased Sri.?,77.l«*\ and de
posits increa&ed $5,048,309. Small offerings of
Ptocks were made on the strength of the poor
showing by the bankp. hut there was no im
portant «=elllnp. Manhattan enjoyed a fractional
gain to 137 and Brooklyn Rapid Transit scored
a plight Improvement. Pennsylvania. Chesa-
I»eak-; and Ohio and most of the other soft coal
_ ers reacted fractionally, and Illinois Central
" showed the effect of moderate selling, presumed
to be for "Western account, in an extreme decline
of nearly a point, which was followed by a
feeble HUWUI- Rock Island, after an early re
cession, moved up again and established an un
important fractional gain, although closing un
- der Friday's last price. In the specialties.
Pressed Steel Car rose an extreme I l^ per cent,
and Evansvllle and Terre Haute advanced near
ly a point. The publication of the report of th*>
Republic Iron and Steel Company for the half
year, showing a surplus of $003,217 after divi
dends on the preferred, stimulated a slight im
provement In the stork.
The London market itsm closed. Last quota
. tlons showed, as a rule, fractional changes from
" Friday, and final dealings aTere insignificant.
The Pennsylvania Railroad draws Its traffic
from many industries, and its earnings are
t\ therefore an excellent Indication of trade condl-
J tlons. For the month of June total earn
ings of all lines showed an increase of $1,700.!*-*)
■ in gross, and an Increase of |5301300 in net.- For
the first six months of the year Broaa earnings
ag the lines east and west of Pittsburg have
Illilinnf (1 £8.274.400. and ret earnings $2,<*>30.
m li«i. as compared with the Fame time in 1001.
F-arninffs this year compare with record break
ing totals of a y«ar ago, and the gains as just
given are the more «=ienificant. In June earn
ings were swollen by th» Increased shipments of
- soft coal, but the receipts from general mer
<han«iise traffic showed a large percentage of
Inrrmse. Railroads throughout the country.
bdv<> in a few cases \vher»- special influences af
fected results, presented gains for June and in
almost every case large increases for the first
"half of the year over the same period a year
flgo. Th» prospects for Use balance of the year
Bare exceedingly bright, especially on the roads
that traverse th» grain and corn belt of the
West.
Trade reports received in the w*ek pr^s^nTeil
■ frw unsat;sfa«t'«ry features. Crop reports showed
daily Improvement in th«^ growing cereals, the
Iron and steel basfnesa exhibited no weak feat
ures, while the const of events in the anthra
cite coal fields apparently foreshadowed a
Fpeedy ending of the strike. The strike has been
a serious factor so far as the earnings of the
a.nthracit«> properties are concerned, but it has
failed to make an important impression on busi
ness in general. It -doubtless checked to some
extent pig iron production in June, bat, despite
its Influence on this market, the total production
of pig iron amounted to S.s;is,."i74 tons, as against
'"- 7.674,013 tons in the corresponding tir.i*- in UMH.
The iron and steel market is crowded with or
ders, and immediate delivery is something hard
to accomplish. It is eatlssautied that 1.000.000
tons of rails have already beta ordered for de
; livery in 1003, while it is predicted that last
year's record of 2.500.00Q tons will be exceeded
ir, 1003- Buyers are confident that industrial
prosperity will continoc for another year at
least, and no better evidence of this confidence
can be found than in The position of the ir'in
and steel market.

FOREIGN EXCHANGE.
r Schumacher A ln ««y:
Farther shipments of pold cannot be in any but
moderate amounts, sine- the p»ri.-"i Is now ap
proachlng when the supply of commercial bins will
suffice to c >v«r all that part of our foreign debt
which may havi to be settled this autumn or
which our bankers may not be wlllintr to ren<«w.
■ru.. Trppk's demand w«a mostly for renewal pur
poses whlcll does not affect the general position o»
exrhar.u<\ since in that case the amounts to be
p Ur , based ar« equlvalenl to f>i" amounts that have
in bi sold tslde of this operation however, the
demand f or all purposes was evidently far In ex
cess of th.- amount! of loan bllhi put out by our
banks nnd bankers. While the demand for money
for four and six months has been even more press
ins this w..-.>k than before, our bnnkers seem to
have hern rather reluctant to draw more of their
\tv and ninety day bills tn sur.ply this demand.
It la h!:t natural that they should refuse to further
Increase the enorntoufl Indebtedness already aceo
mulated. Perhaps our Kuropean friends themselves
nre not willlna: to further tncraniin the amount of.
their acoeptancea, In spite of this general reluct
ance, a fair amount of loan hills was yet sold here
this w»»ek. but not much more of this business will
probably be dona after this.
