THE DAT 1 OPERATIONS IN STOCKS.
Stock market values moved toward a higher
levjel throughout the day on an active volume
of business. There was a good demand for se
curities from commission houses, while buying
for the account of the short interest ,ip par
ticularly heavy, the demand from operators who
Fold stocks short a week ago being an impor
tant factor in the day's upward movement. The
slightest inquiry for securities was followed by
a material rise In prices. Dealings in the Gould
Fhares. especially Manhattan and Missouri Pa
cific, were heavy, supplying, with the exception
of St. Paul, the most active transactions in the
five hours of business. St. Paul was dealt in to
th» extent of over 100.000 shares, closing at a
net gain of nearly seven points. The advance
In this issue was not followed by news develop
ments affecting the property, but reports were
again circulated that the terms of the proposed
new stock issue would soon be announced. The
character of buying In St. Paul indicated activ
ity on the part of interests associated with the
property. The new Rock Island stocks were also
Important features, the common advancing over
one point, while the preferred on a comparative
ly light volume of business closed at a net ad
vance of four points. Rock Island preferred Is
now at a level that appeals to investors. The
stock, of course, will eventually sell many points
above its present quotation, and. according to
the opinion of careful market judges, purchases
made at the prevailing price should result in
handsome profits.
The entire list of stocks showed noteworthy
advances as compared with the preceding day's
final figures. Manhattan declined In the late
trading several points from the high record
made in the morning, owing to realizing sales.
There was no official confirmation of the re
ports regarding the alleged purchase of the
Manhattan company by the subway company,
but it was generally believed, nevertheless, that
th" ronsolldation of the local transportation
corporations would be effected. In the industrial
list there was a good demand for the United
States Steel shares, especially the common. The
buyers of the iron and steel stocks express the
greatest confidence in the outlook for the iron
end Bteel business, and they do not hesitate to
predict ■ continuation of the present prosperous
condition of th" iron and steel business In this
country and higher market prices for the stocks
of the I'nited States Steel Corporation. The
preferred stock of this concern is selling at a
price that yields a splendid return on the in
vestment. Industrial stocks in general are sell
ing at a cheap level. At prevailing quotations
the greater number of industrial issues are
mor«» attractive than the railroad stocks, and the
chances are that, in th" next active bull move
ment industrial shares will sell many points
above ruling: figure?:. The oar building com
pany stocks are well worth the attention of
careful investors. Orders for new cars are being
placed by every railroad company in the coun
try, and a? a result of this enormous demand
for new equipment the American Car and Foun
dry Company, the Pressed Steel Car Company
and the Pullman company have enough work on
hand to keep their plants busy for a year to
come.
The local money market is gradually developing
an easier tendency. According to the known
movement of mon**y in the week, the local banks
have gained a moderate amount In casn hold
ings, while interior movements show a return
flr->- from Western points to New- York. Ship
ment from th*> New-York banks to the South
and West in the last week reached a total of
$-.220.1 <"*"*. while receipts from the same points
amounted to $3.2.26,100. Time money was put
out in moderate sums at «i per cent, while call
money ruled at 4 per cent. Sterling exchange
«-a; a trifle firmer. People who have good in
formation are not uneasy over the money mar
ket situation, as there ts an ample supply of
money in New-York to meet all present require*
mentp. Including possible gold exports and spe
cial demands for syndicate operations.

BROOKLYN RAPID TRANSIT HAS PT-RlF.r»
its FEED WIRKS. - The decline in Brooklyn
Rnpid Transit stock yesterday morning was attrib
uted In some quarters to the action of the Brook
lyn authorities requiring all electric light, tele
graph, electric feed and other wires to be placed
underground Immediately. This was supposed In
uninformed circles especially to affect the Brook
lyn Rapid Transit Company. When the statement
was called to the attention of certain officers and
directors of the company, they said at once that
the situation was entirely misunderstood. a.« the
overhead trolley wires of the Brooklyn Rapid
Transit Company were made special exceptions to
the law to be enforced, and that so far as the, com
pany's feed wires were concerned, It had been put
ting them underground for the last year, and had
dmie pr». not because of the enforcement of the new
law, but for economic reasons of its own. and
therefore the law did not affect the company in
that respect.

CONDITION OF TRADE.
Dun's Review" says:
Voluntary increases in wages by some of the.
largest railway systems in the country bear elo
quent testimony to the amount of business han
dled In the past and emphasize the confidence of
officials In continued heavy traffic. Moreover,
by this addition of large sums to the purchasing
power of railway employes there is assurance of
a larger demand for all staple lines of merchan
dise. Temporarily sales of seasonable lines of
wearing apparel are retarded by mild weather, but
this loss will be fully made up when low tempera
ture becomes general. Preparations for holiday
trade are on an unprecedented scale, especially at
Interior points. There is no relief as to the con
gestion of railway traffic, nor any immediate pros
pect of free movement at the points of most se
rious blockade. Coal freight is steadily gaining.
and all railway earnings thus far reported for No
vember exceed last year's by 5.9 per cent, and those
of MM by 15 per cent. Securities touched the
lowest average price on Tuesday, notwithstanding
sensational dealings in Manhattan. Total sales
were heavy, which accounts in part for the in
crease in bank exchanges at this city, for th«
week 12.7 per cent over the corresponding period
!ast year and f.2.9 per "cent over 1533. At other
leading cities without the aid of speculation there
wore gains of £.7 and 27.3 per cent, respectively.
"Bradstreefs" says
Favorable condition* still govern 'he trade situa
tion. The mild, open fall weather is complained of
as restricting the movement of winter gtods at
retail and delaying collections at a few points, but
it is not to be forgotten that present temper
favor the continued growth of the cotton crop and
a larger yield than heretofore expected, while it Is
enabling the railroads to make .1 far better fisht
against the prevailing freight congestion than was
earlier deemed possible. In finan -i ii circles the
tone is rather better. The feeling grows that much
heedless speculation has been liquidated without
revealing any important . structural detects in th«
general business world From Western centres the
report comes that money has ceased to Bow to the
country, and that the return movement has b^gun.
No renewal of bullish stock market activity Is ex
pected or honed for. but the tone of the money
market Is undeniably better than some weeks ago.
Bank clearings show gains over last week .irnl last
year, in keeping with the generally acknowledged
increased activity In all business ltn*-s. Export
trade returns look better than preliminary reports
foreshadowed Agricultural products, owing to high
pnc>'.-». have gone abroad in smaller volume x'nar
expected, but there Is evidently a larger move
ment «>f manufactured goods, be.cause the decrease
In October from a year ago Is a very small on«.
and only three months in 'Tie country's History «x
ceedfd that of October this year in value. Th»
outlook 1^ apparently for a heavy distribution of
Christmas goods, particularly Jewelry and fancy
articles. Spring business, too. 1b In a more forward
ronditl >n than In previous years.
