10 NEW PUBLICATIONS. A Traitor's Course — Aids to Dra matic Study, Rhyming and Riding. "' The Intent of Charles Burr Todd's account of Benedict Arnold i* to show that "it was the fascinations, the persuasion* lone continued, the Intrigue* with the British, of a wife madly loved, and which. If discovered, he kn«n» would tear her from his arms, that led him to commit bit monumental crime." The accepted explanation of the moment. the corruption of British gold, whatever Its standing In school bonks, has -not been tone maintained by careful writers Mr. Tofid's "The Real Benedict Arnold" <A. S. Barnes & Co.). in In purpose ■ rehabilitation of th* man at the expense of his second wife. Hut starting with this scheme the hook is hardly successful. The evidence rests on Aaron Burr's written ac count, published after the death of the inter ested parties, of the reception of Mr.'. Arnold at Paramus by his wife, then Mrs. Prevost. Mr. Todd quotes from Matthew L. Davis's "Memoirs of Aaron Burr" to the effect that In reciting her experiences Mrs. Arnold paid "that through great persuasion and unceasing perseverance •he, had ultimately brought the General Into nn agreement to surrender West Point to the Brit lfh." The rest Is what we can "no doubt" as •urn* and "can readily Imagine." The treatment here lacks body. This Is the crux of the whole matter, but as here presented we have, instead of a careful examination of the facts, an inter ••tine animated constructive theory a* "> what th* facts probably may have been. IT Arnold was led to his betrayal by the f«=3r that the discovery of the Intense young Tcry's flßtrlrue* with the British "would tear her from tie arms." we might under* his defection. It would not explain away the deliberate plan of mm lanlif ring one of the country's most Impor tant strategic posts to the enemy. There should be more definite exposition also of his passion for Mrs. Arnold. The letter of proposal Is flow ery, but In the style of the day, and 6cant as evidence. Arnold was sadly rr.lrused by military cabals and by an Incompetent Continental Congress; yet Mr..Todd quite disregards the fact that if Ar nold suffered he was not the one victim of the hour. When we read that the court martial of 3TEO "was the last straw; henceforth Mi prog ress toward the pit of Infamy which had lr.r.e been preparing for him was rapid,"— we note a (weakness In the author's special plea. Mrs. 'JLmoia presumably had ■■ to do with the be trayal. But Arnold, utterly fearless !n the field. sjlftad with true military Instinct of the most vsJuabls sort, was yet a civilian whose early training had not embraced a fine cense of mili tary honor, and a man unequal to the trials «T exasperating Injustice which an amorphous wtlon Inflicted on Its most brilliant servants, and which in his own case were complicated by a domestic situation of Insidious danger. Mr. TTodd's dashing, sometimes almost extravagant account of the Arnold of Quebec. Valcour and Saratoga, the gallant Arnold not yet tempted. to \relcoxna. But he Is not at pains to take off the revolutions' rpectacles except for his hero. A good chance Is open for a rehabilitating sketch •f -the lovely Miss P. Phirren." Oulllem de Castro's "Las Moeedades del Cld" was the basis cf Corneille's Parisian triumph In 1636. He made over a romantic historical drama Into a classical French tragedy. He eliminated all the comic and grotesque in the original to satisfy the demands of French theory of the day. He served the unities of time and place, which meant much omission, to be re placed In part by expository dialogue. Manners, characters and motives were changed, the moral conflict heightened and the action concentrated. In 3644 Corneille put forth an adaptation of Alarcon'c "Verdad Sospechosa" In "Le Menteur." This, too. was made over by French rules, and gave the author some trouble In unity of place. The details of these changes are set forth with precision and at a length in an essay on "Cor neille and the Spanish Drama" (The Columbia University Press) by J. B. Segall. In the case <*f the Od the original and the French result are examined carefully act by act. In the case of "Le Menteur" the comparison is made at one traversing. Th( early plays, of which "L'lllu •Ion" In one of [ta characters suggests the in spiration of a Ppanish type, n.re briefly examined, as Is the "Suite dv Mcnteur" in imitation of 2x>p« de Vega's "Amar Fin saba a QuiCn," and "Heracllus" of dirputed origin The origins Is of the two Menteur plays were Independent pro ductions, and the author of this essay notes that tb* use of Lope de Vega's play as a sequel to that adapted from Alarcon's may have been suggested by the elaborate falsehood of Don Tttan In describing Don Pedro's murderer. No conclusion Is attempted of the question as to who was Indebted for the ideas in "ll ("radius." Comellle or Calderon. In "Don Sanche d'Ara- Con' sources are FtiH less Important. Such an essay will have little or no interest to those not conversant with Comrille's plays, at least with the "Cid" and the "Mentev.r." It is not likely to be ai'proaclv-d except with the play* In hand or well In mind. ITnder these cir cumstances, then, it would seem that much of this detailed scenario work Is unnecessary. The essay has the merit of not proving too much. A commercial and general use for a rhyming dictionary If somewhat new. The suggestion Is made in Dr. J. l.ingmulr'f revision of J. Walker's "Rhyming Dictionary" <E. P. Dutton & Co.) that th« book may prove of valuable as sistance In deciphering errors in telegrams. That •uch errors may be of wide eigr.iScance recent public events plainly show. In telegraph codes words stand for stated sentences. When these words are confused or mutilated in transmission the merchant Is Invited to become poetaster. An Instance < • not uncorrmon word mutila tion may be added to mow the value of the book for the purpose above mentioned. In a tel «aram received, a word appears sis "Sterturn." The merchant pocs through the usual course of looking through his code for a word lik* this, wfclch win make sens in connection with the remainder of the message, am!, after wasting an hour or more In trying to decipher the true me*!. . Is compelled to re.urn the telegram to the telegraph company for repetition. Probably, in the course of the following day he receives the amended message, showing that the word originally dispatched was "Overturn " meaning "Sell to cjrlw? 1 .000 bale? Tinneveliy Cotton at .*>■» pence per pound." By this time. however, the London price has declined to .V» pence a pound so that he must either run the risk of holding the cotton in a falling market, or submit to an Immediate loss of £3<v> on the previous day's quotation. Now, had this mer chant referred to this book under the letter N for words end!: "erturn" he would at once have found "Overturn." and have saved some hundreds of pound*. An Index Is appended to the syllabic dic tionary of all perfect rhymes of different or thography, and allowable rhymes of different Sl— l. In this, authority for usage Is from time to time cited from English poets. The index is designed as an aid to using the dictionary in which the words, being arranged by their In verted order, terminations of sim: orthog raphy are classified together. Words or different orthography, but similar sound, are thus sep arated, a difficulty which the Index alms to cor rect. This edition is plainly mad*. well printed from clear type on paper sufficiently opaque. but of light weight The page. » T - single col cmned. Mrs Alice M. Hayes has revised her guide to sidesaddle tiding. "The Horsewoman" (imported by Charles ficribner's Sons), after an additional experience of bunting, chiefly in Leicestershire aac Cheshire. The chapter mi "Riding Ex- perfenccs" is omitted, and varioui additions are made on the basis of the reception of the earlier edition and the books of the authors husband. Illustrations from photographs, which will be < found In plenty, are of great assistance In fol lowing the authors technical discussion of seat. Jumping and such appliances as safety stirrups and safety bars. The use of an apron skirt is commended as the only sensible expedient. What the author has to pay on cross saddle riding for women is found' on her own experience In deliberately '.earning for herself. She considers that the cross saddle gives less security of seat. Sh* doubts that men could ride over fences without the Mof reins as women do. "It is not diffi cult to trot or canter." Bays airs. Hayes, "in a man's plain saddle, but I think our conformation requires the assistance of knee rolls in Jump- Ing." The invention of the leaping head has made hunting possible for women. The author Is familiar with the practice In the East, where women ride astride, but observes that they rare ly depart from a walk. Of course, the grip Is quite different in the two methods. For cross saddle the thigh should be fiat, not round; good length is required from hip to knee, and a silent inclination to bow lee*. The -book is furnished with a pood Index, and should be useful for reference. HEIR UNEXPECTEDLY TO $2,000,000. German Who Served Under Maximilian So Informed — Been a Tailor.
