STOCK MAEKET OPERATIONS.
•Strength and activity characterized the stock
market yesterday, the general list closing >lth
•übsLßJitlal net advances. There were no news
developments, unless the favorable bank state
ment, with its Bhowin*- of a. surplus reserve
higher th&n for any preceding week in more
tiian six years, be claseed as an Item of news.
Rumors persisted of an attempt to compel th*
"United States Bt-el Corporation to take over
the Republic Iron and Steel Company, but that
thews stories were not very seriously received
was shown by the fact that Steel preferred
gained 1% points on the day. the common ad
va-nclrtf; fractionally. The advance in Southern
Pacific continued, the transactions being* larger
than in any other stock on the list, and the
purchases In considerable measure represent
ing- the execution of commission house orders.
Union Pacific moved up with Southern Pacific,
dosir? at the highest of the day. 96%. There
■were noticeably large dealings also In Atchlson,
which gained 1% points. Brooklyn Rapid Transit
gained an even point, while the feature of
the bond department was the advance from
85% to £S of the 4 per cent bonds of the Nassau
Electric Railroad Company, which Is controlled
by the Brooklyn Rapid Transit, but the 980
year lease of which to the latter syetem was
recently cancelled because of the popular pres
sure for extension of the transfer privilege in
Brooklyn. The market closed firm, with final
prices, as a rule, the best of the day.
Cash Is still piling up at this centre, the bank
statement yesterday showing a gain for the
week of 52.1-2.400 in this item, despite the
withdrawal for export to Cuba of $4,£00.000
gold, the larger part of which figured in the
■week's averages. The increase in cash holdings
compared with the preliminary estimate of about
$8,000,000, based upon the known movements of
money, a fairly close approximation in view
of the showing for the preceding week, when the
Increase in cash, which had been expected to
be In excess of $3,000,000, turned out to be only
$131,-00. Loans increased $1,014,500, a smaller
amount than might have been expected, as the
stock market during the last week has been ac
tive, as midsummer business goes. An increase
of $2,919,100 ie shown In the deposit item of
the bank statement, bringing up the deposits to
the new high record total of $1,207,132,500; and
from this Increase In deposits and the net In
crease In cash a gain in surplus reserve of $1,
422,025 results. Th« surplus reserve now stands
at $07,731,475, or 4.79 per cent of the deposits,
the aggregate cash reserve against deposit lia
bilities being 29.79 per cent, while the legal re
quirement is 25 per cent.
