STOCK 2__ll__ST OPERATIONS.
A sensational advance in St. Paul stock in
yesterday's market on an enormous volume of
Ceallnss was not accompanied by news develop
ments affecting the property, but th* Street was
filled with rumors regarding the Northern Secur
ities situation, involving- a settlement in which
the St. Paul company would flrure as an im
portant factor. Rumor said that the Northern
Pacific company would pass Into the hands of
the Bt Paul through a sale by the Union Pacific
of Its Northern Pacific stock holdings to the Chi
cago. Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway, while it
was also reported that Interests Identified with
the Erie would Join with the St Paul in buying
control of Northern Pacific Evidently these ru
mors were not based on facts, as Interests con
nected with the Northern Securities Company
■aid that there was no change in the Western
railway situation. The most interesting report
In connection with the 7 point advance In
fit. Paul stock was that James J. Hill was heav
ily abort of this stock, and that the opportunity
had been taken to "squeeze" him. Opening at
1597*, St. Paul advanced to 167, closing at 166. a
net advance for the day of 6»4 per cent. Al
though the upward movement In this Issue and
th* strength in Union Pacific. Missouri Pacific
and several other prominent shares caused con
siderable uneasiness on the part of the short in
terests through >ut the list, conservative opera
tors considered the Improvement in the stocks
named an indication of manipulation that might
encourage speculative demoralization. They
therefore advised enthusiastic public traders to
rurb their fast developing desire to purchase
securities. The fart that London was an active
buyer in the local market naturally attracted in
terest to the no-called international issues, but
the chief factor in the day's operations was the
sharp advance in St. Paul to a level that returns
a little over 4 per cent on the Investment.
St. Paul is a solid Investment Issue, and there
to no reason to suppose that the people in con
trol of the property will countenance any opera
tion which may affect the Investment value of
the company's securities: but it Is unfortunate,
nevertheless, that the stock Is advancing under
the Influence of manipulation, rather than
through the medium of Investment purchases.
Union Pacific made a new high record for the
season, while throughout the list securities sold
at their best prices of the year. In the last hour
moderate reactions were recorded in the greater
number of stocks, and at the close quotations, as
a rule, were under the best figures of the day.
United States Steel preferred failed to respond
to the Influence of Union Pacific's strength.
which was so effective in other parts of the list.
Doubtless the Interests which have been pushing
Steel preferred higher in the last week took ad
vantage of the strength in St. Paul and other
issues to liquidate their holdings of the Steel
■hares. Canadian Pacific was a strong feature
on local and London buying, enjoying a max
imum advance of over 1 point. This stock Is
cheap in comparison with St. Paul and other
high priced railway Issues, and this fact appar
ently appeals to investors, as the issue has been
largely bought for investment account in ■ the
last few weeks. Regarding the company's
finances It is interesting to note that for the
fourth week in September gross earnings show
an Increase of $51,000. making a gain for the
month of $283,000 and a gain from July 1 of
$1,082,578. Further aggressive strength of
Northern Securities stock on the curb, of course,
was a factor in helping along the various fairy
tales regarding the Northwestern railway situa
tion. Steel preferred closed at a net loss of Hi
per cent.
Last week's decline in bank holdings brings
the period of higher money rates nearer, but it
does not foreshadow disturbance in the local
money market. Richer rates tor loans are in
evitable, while imports of gold in the course of
the fail probably will be made. London, accord
ing to cable dispatches, expects a demand on
that centre for gold for American account, but
It will do all In its power to prevent a large
raoTement of the metal to this side. If, how
ever, wa have the credits abroad and If we need
the money, efforts on the part of foreign bank
ers to prevent gold shipments to the United
States will not be successful. Fortunately, our
•-ports of cotton at present are heavy In vol
ume, and as a consequence this country is piling
up a trade balance in Europe which may have to
be settled in gold. The possibility of a with
drawal by the government of federal deposits
in national banks Is becoming more remote, as
the national Income Is now running in excess of
expenditures; while the prospects do not favor
a deficit for the year, in spite of the grave fears
of Democratic politicians, who are trying to con
vince voters. In their usual clumsy, prevaricat
ing way. that the country to en the verge of
bankruptcy as far as government finances are
concerned. Democratic readers are invited to
examine the movement of government finances

That there is plenty of money in the country
Is reflected In the government's monthly circula
tion statement showing an increase in the
amount of money in circulation In the month of
September of $B.S69.r>Cr>. and in increase in the
last twelve months of $1M£82.420. Of this In
crease, $111,708.44)9 is in gold coin and gold cer
tificates. The total amount of gold and gold cer
tificates in the country, exclusive of Treasury
holdings, is $1.125.:?.".00_, compared with a total
twenty-five years ago of $Oft_M_t§so. Treasury
holdings representing assets of the government
amount to $-73. 154. _!."•, an increase of over
f-.000.n00 in the last month. Including Treasury
holding?, the general stock of money in the
United States amounts to $2,829,273*316. com

Based on an estimated population of S2. '-'14,000,
the circulation per capita Is $31 16.
