THE WEEK IX WALL STREET.
In the five business days last week trading. In
•ecuritles was active on a movement of values
that generally tended in the direction of higher
quotations, final prices showing a long list of
substantial net gains. In Tuesday's market an
advance in call money rates to 4 per cent was
followed by a short period of declining values,
but on the reaction offerings of securities were
easily absorbed, while In the rest of the week
there was no trace of the money scare fiat upset
bo many weak accounts when rates began to
move higher. A higher quotation for loans is
net an unnatural development at this time of \
the year, and in view of the various Influences
that in the last two months have served to re
duce local bank supplies it is somewhat sur
prising that rates have ruled at so extremely
low a level for so long a period. The advance
on Wednesday was th* first since early In the
year.
Firmer rates for money were an effective in
fluence in causing a weaker tendency in the
sterling exchange market, and as a consequence
The gold export situation, which in the first two
days of the week promised to lead to heavy
shipments of gold coin, changed more in favor
of this centre, although foreign exchange bank
ers were not willing to admit that the outward
movement of the precious metal was over for
the season. It is easy to see. however, that
further material shipments of gold will cause
a further strengthening in money market rates,
Vhich in turn will bring the gold export move
ment to an end. In the last week the local
banks lost more than f6.090.000 on gold ex
port account, but their loan resources were not
materially depleted, owing to the reduction in
the loan and deposit accounts, which offset in
great measure the decline in the cash holdings
of the Clearing House institutions.
There appears to be no uncertainty in Wall
Street circles over the probable course of the
stock market In the next few months. Despite
the enormous appreciation that has already
taken place In securities values, the greater
cumber of Wall Street speculators have thrown
caution to the winds and are making their mar
ket ventures in the confident belief that the
movement of values will continue to run In the
direction of higher quotations for many months
to come. It is a fact, and a well known fact,
that the larger speculative and Investment in
terests are •till working on the long side of the
iK&rket, and from the general characteristics of
the current Wall Street business it ts not diffi
cult to realize that the great financial powers
are not yet ready for a declining market. Un
expected adverse developments might, of course,
upset their calculations, but, according to their
point of view, there is nothing ahead which will
Interfere with their plans for higher prices In
securities and Incidentally the launching of new
enterprises, the bringing out of new bond is
sues and the carry;::?; through of pending rail
road deals. New financing ; lans for various
railway end industrial corporations are likely
to be successful in a tune of rising values in
Wall Street, and the men who are the financial
backers of large corporate institutions are tak
ing advantage of the current cheerful Wall
Street situation to put into effect plans which
have been a long time maturing. It is interest-
Ing to note In connection with recent offerings
of bonds that since July 1 the big railroads of
the United States have put out new securities
aggregating 5450.000.000. and including the
Japanese loan and the recent city loan there
has been Issued since the Brat of the fiscal year
an aggregate of $500,000,000 In new securities.
Two years ago Wall Street suffered from Indi
gestion, owing to a plethora of new stock and
*>end issue?, but after a time this dyspeptic
condition passf-d away, and the appetite for new
issues again became voracious. It is pointed
out, however, that thore is more money now
available for Wall Street purposes, and that
general conditions affecting values are infi
nitely stronger than they were at the time of
Wall Street's troubles of two years ago.
There !s no doubt that general conditions are
Browing stronger every day. that the country's
power of absorption for new stocks and bonds
is larger than ever before and that the posi
tion of the country's money supply encourages
an active demand for all first class investment
issues. Of course if money rau-n at this centre
should be quoted at a big) level for a protract- i
f-d period the .itinand for unties at present ;
prices would become less active, but accord
in* to the opinion of the best observers money '
rates will not rule at an advanced -el for any I
length of time, the ideas of these observers I
favoring the theory that after the turn of the I
year call funds wil! return so the 2 per cent rate |
with 1 corresponding reaction in the rates for !
time funds. Perhaps this idea dees not take into !
consideration the increased demands that will i
be maie on the money market in connection j
vith the expansion in the eountry*i; industrial '
activities.
Regarding pending dei-elopments affecting i
railway aud industrial corporations there are :
inCications in the movement of values in many j
issues that announcements of importance will !

traders, who believed that Mr. Lawson meant
what he said when he announced thai he would
throw 31)0.000 shares of Amalgamated on the
market, but, as a rule, the course of the etock
was in the direction of higher figures.
Kailroad earnings received ..t.n week showed
improvement, bank clearings were heavy in all
parts of the country, and ail reports from trade
centres mlected an expanding volume of busi
ness and great enthusiasm on the part of busi
ness men throughout the country. In the iron
and steel trade mfUa that have long been idle
were reopened, the demand for finished mate
rial was more active, and the general output in
all tlie iron and steel works was larger, while
tiie tendency ot prices was firmer. Naturally the
favorable progress of the country's trade, the
large corn anJ cotton crops and the stability
of finaiu-ial and political condition? served to
create enthusiasm in speculative circles and to
encourage the investment of idle money. While
many observers believe that stock market
values adequately measure past and prospective
Improvement in the country's business, prices
on the Stot k Exchange show a remarkable re
sistance to all efforts to bring about lower fig
ures.
