Bonding Companies Offer Big Rebates —
Dealers' Association Competing.
AH llouor tax certificates for the year HM>*M ex
pired at midnight, and if a dealer wished to begin
business as usual on Monday morning ho had to se
cure the renewal of his certificate before the excise
office, at No. 1 Madison-aye., closed. Up to a few
days ago the trade had been a great deal worried
over the possibility of the passage of the proposed
amendment to the Raines law. As the amendment
has not passed, however, the question goes over
for all places that grot their certificates by the close
of business yesterday. It is to be supposed, how
ever, no hotel certificates, formally so named, are
being Issued at present. This Ik nothing more than
a matter of form, however, the term "hotel certifi
cate" being omittrri.
It is said that some of the bonding companies aro
allowing a rebate of 33 per cent this year. There
has even been talk that som<^ of the companies
have sent canvassers out promising large rebates,
a part of which goes to the dealer himself.
But the new feature this year is the part taken by
the Liquor Dealers' Association in establishing its
own office among the offices of the bonding com
panies, on the third floor of the Metropolitan Build
ing.
Edward H. Healy. Deputy Commissioner of Ex
cise for New- York County, said last night that up
to 8 o'clock the office had received about 6.700 appli
cations, slightly in advance of the figures for last
year. He said that the receipts were upward of
fc.000.000.
