In view of the sharp advances recorded earlier In the week and of the strength exhibited In the morning operations yesterday, a check to the upward movement In the nature of realizing sales and pressure from the bear element In the last two hours of business was not surprising. The selling was not significant of a change lo speculative temperament. Wall Street Is bull ish, and according; to all Indications It will re main in this frame of mind for the rest of the month, unless the substantial Interest* should decide to cease their operations for higher quo tations, of which there' is not the slightest Indi cation at the moment. There are many people who have stocks which they are anxious to market at better prices, and as they are powerful In resources affecting the Stock Ex change machinery, while they are backed by splendid conditions in the world of trade, it Is not unlikely that their efforts to create a genu ine August bull boom will be successful, though developments In Russia may come to a head in time to upset their well laid plans. It Is pointed out that the 'increase in dividends al ready announced, the resumption of dividends on United States Steel common, the probability of increased disbursements on Union Pacific, Norfolk & Western. Chesapeake & Qhlo and other shares, to say nothing of the chances of the placing of Southern Pacific in the dividend list, will be effective Influences in attracting a widespread demand for securities, but so far there has been no indication of aggressive in terest on the part of the outsiders, save in the case of commission house clients who hold down seats in brokers' offices the livelong day, and who generally lose their money. The conserva tive business interests of the country are not dabbling in stocks at present, nor are they buy ing securities for investment to any extent, their unwillingness to come Into the market being based on the present active employment of their funds In the channels of trade and on the high quotations that obtain in most investment issues. Foreign houses were again, sellers on balance in the local market, while prices of American securities abroad were weak as a rule, though closing better under the influence of activo buy- Ing In Union Pacific. Russian bonds were weak, but. the general markets abroad showed some Improvement, and sentiment, according to cable dispatches, was* more optimistic over the Rus sian situation, though there was nothing espe cially encouraging In the news from the Czar's unhappy country. It Is Quite generally under stood that the foreign bankers who are heavily Interested In Russian securities and Russian In dustries have agreed to support to the extent of their power Russian investments and Russian credit, though in doing so they may be compelled to sell other securities. Including American. " The United States Is rich enough to take whatever holdings foreign owners of our securities may sell. but. of course, heavy liquidation of our stocks and bonds will cut this country off from gold imports, a ; reflection of which 1s presented in the present position of the sterling exchange market, which is strong at a time when it ought normally to be working toward a lower level. Exports of merchandise from this country are growing, and the decline in grain prices is bring ing the market to a point that will encourage heavy exports of breadstuffs. Already the export demand is stronger, and were it not for the sell- Ing of foreign held American securities which has been going on for the last week the pressure of grain bills would be heavy enough to carry sterling rates to the gold Import level. In the current week local banks have lost In cash hold ings an amount estimated at about $5.000,Q00, due almost entirely to Panama Canal bond pay ments. Last hour losses were moderately heavy in the greater number of shares which were the early leaders in point of advance, the chief weakness being exhibited by Amalgamated Copper. Ameri can Smelting, Brooklyn Rapid Transit. Pennsyl vania. Reading. Southern Pacific. Union Pacific and United States Steel common. The failure of Steel common to advance to an important ex tent since the dividend declaration has caused considerable disappointment in the Street, but. In view of the vast amount of the stock outstand ing and Mie present fair price for the issue. Its lack of movement Is not hard to explain. FOREIGN TRADING.— Foreign houses sold KM* shares on balance In the local market. In I>fradon Russian bonds were weak, but the general market acted welL Money was to good demand, though quotations were unchanged, On th» Co_ttieatal bourses trading was dull and prises fairly firm. The London Stock Exchange will be closed to-day and will not reopen until Tuesday morning. THE IRON SITUATION.— Rosers, Brown & Ca in their review of the Iron market, say: The week has served to emphasize tee continued high pressure in the steel trade. On the oae band. the report of tbe Steel Corporation ■hows quarterly earnings of over 0.0.0. «.«o»,sa» tons of orders booked ahead and enough promise for the future, to warrant the resumption of dividends on the coop mon stock. The activity of the Independent con cerns is shown by the enormous sales of baste In the Eastern market* These have totalled over 150.000 tons In the last fortnight, and have absorbed the supply at steel making Iron in this territory well Into the last quarter of the year. Prices are firm at the recent advance of 25 cents a ton. Penn sylvania furnaces are holding firm at $1725 fur nace, and Virginia producers claim to have got not less than $16 50 on all their recent sales. Shortage of labor continues to hamper operations of all kinds throughout the country, and Is a serious factor in reducing the output of ore, coke and Iron. The problem of pig iron makers (or the balance of the year will not be to find a sale for their product, but to secure raw materials and. to keep costs within bounds. Aside from this shortage of labor. with the serious possibilities Involved, there Is no cloud on the horizon. AMALGAiIATBD-GRBENB COPPER.— la a curious fact that the advance to Amalgamated Copper was so timed as to coincide with an ad vance of Greene Copper on the curb, and the re port was circulated that Amalgamated Copper would take over the Greene company. The report found few believers. The manipulators on the curb were, however, kept to close touch with the move ments of Amalgamated on the floor by a system of signal? from the windows of one of the firms which was active to advancing Amalgamated. One reason why the movement failed to attract fol lower* was that the rest of the market showed heaviness and an Inclination to sell off while the copper movement was at its height. Otherwise the speculation waa rather quiet and prices somewhat Irregular. The fluctuations, however, were within narrow limits, although in a few of the specialties an <*a»U»r ten dency was manifested.
