STOCK MARKET OPERATIOIffS.
Transactions in stocks were moderately active
throuphout the two hours of business on a
movement of values -which generally tended in
the direction ■! hip; • ■ quotations. The ex
pectation that Eorae of the grouad lost by The
hanks a wf-fk aco would be recovered in yester
day's Clearing House statement enrouraped a
bullish sentiment amonp the room traders, while
further buying for foreign account and a higher
rar.pe for American ■•ouritieß In the London
market also served to help the upward move
ment, which was most pronounced in St. Paul.
Ch'-pajteake & Ohio. Great Northern and Great
Northern ore certificates. Northern Pacific. Peo
ple'? Gas and Union Pacific, In Canadian Pa
cific and Mexican Central local and foreign re
alizing sales carried prices under the losing
figures in FYidwy's market, hut in the greater
number of issues net gains were recorded at the
close, the publication of a relatively favorable
bank return being a fat- tor of some importance
in the last half hour of trading. The Street held
the well founded impression that the so-called
Standard Oil interests were actively supporting
the marker probably for their own protection,
and there were evidences of buying of this
character in St. Paul, despite the high price at
which the issue was soiling. It Is understood
that the two most prominent directors of the
Standard Oil Company have been accumulating
St. Paul in the, last lew days, and it may be
that the great St. Paul "mystery" will work
itself down to the concentration of the control
of the property more strongly in the hands of
the Rockefeller party Northern Pacific's pro
poned large increase in capital stock was fa
vorably received, a reflection of which was pre
sented in a net gain in the stock of more than
1 per cent.

is felt abroad that withdrawals for American
account at this time would tend to disturb for
eign financial '.renditions. It is pointed out by
foreign «-xcha.nge bunkers that this country
may. however, receive goid from an unexpected
source, namely, Mexico. The Mexican Centra!
Railway purchase by the Mexican government
will be financed in gold, and the payments for
the control of the property, which is largely
hfid abroad, may be diverted to the United
States, thus obviating the necessity ..f our
bank-rs culling on London for direct shipments
ol ..... United States.
Europe, at present on ordinary account un
doubtedly is in debt to this country, especially
as it has been v persistent buyer of our secur
ities in the last fortnight, while trade balances
have been running heavily in favor of the
Usatt'd States. In tli*- month November, de
spite record breaking Imports of merchandise,
there was an excess of merchandise exports
l'r«.m here to the value of $62419.568, compare,!
with an excess in the same month last year of
172.043.000. The gain in imports as comiiared
With November. 1905, was heavier than the gam
in exports, and the total imports were larger
than ever reported in any preceding month in
the history of the country. Hence the heavy
government receipts on customs account, which
are responsible for the daily ma by the local
banks to the Sub-Treasury. Exports were
larger than in any corresponding month and.
with the exception of October, were greater
than any preceding month recorded. Imports
*'*«* ln value $119,689,830, and exports were
Jl6_'.r»fiy,3i'S, figures which bear impressive testi
mony to the great wealth of the country.
