GENERAL MARKET REPORT.
-„___ New Tork, December 16. 1909.
COFFEE- Th» coffee market was firmer to-day; In
fact the showing was considered a remarkably firm
one In view of the reactionary tendency of th« French
market. The local market opened unchanged to 10
points hi her ' an! closed steady at a net advance of
JOHIS points. Buying by Wall Street people and big
trade interests caused the a-l\anr«. and it was
rumored that the. renewal of the demand from th«
big: roasting interests which have recently taken little
part In the trading was ba*ed on expectations of a
decided falling off in receipts In the near futurn.
Rather smaller figures for th» Jundiahy movement and
the. fart that the trade found nothing In the regular
news of th* day to explain the buying movement
probably formed the basis for tho conjectures regard
ing tho movement. Bales for the day were about
83.7P0 bapo. The market at Havre vra« hi to '-. bane
lower, following the stroi p advance of the previous
day, and this caused some disappointment, which there
v as I 1"I 1 "' 11111 * In other news items to modify, save for
the slight decrease in the receipts reported at primary
points. At the opening of tho local market, however,
there was good buying by one of the local brokers,
who ha* a reputation for being in touch with very
Influential Interests, and following this the market
had the support of the trade interests referred to and
who are supposed to have purchased about one-third
of the day's total Bales. The recent advance in the
trench market and yesterday's upturn in the local
market would suggest that the trade Is more im
pressed by the recent prog, ass made with the valori
zation plan than had been admitted earlier In the
week, but it Is still believed that the most Important
factor will continue to be the volume of primary re
ceipts. The market for spot coffee was steady, "with
Quotations ranging from 7 to 77 1«c1 «c for Rio No 7.
The range of contract prices In the local market to

COTTON cotton market made a steady showing
with buclness rather quiet and the demand for the week
end covering- of shorts for the most part. The market
c!r>sM steady at a net advance of 191 points. Sales for
the day were estimated at about 75,0<X> bales. The open
ing was steady at aa advance of 5-JfO points. In response
to higher cable dispatches than look-xl for. Uvorpool
was eki" to coma about 90>H points lower on the New
York close of Friday, and was B£4 points net higher at
her c'...s.>. Some cable dispatches said that the advunee
there was ' ist before the close, and had resulted from
buying oriers from this side, with a view to making a
selling lasis. but other cable, dispatches were more en
couraging as to conditions, attributing the advance to
oversold bears and the better showing of th« week-end
figures. The local market was rather Irregular early,
and lo?t a point or two of the gain, owing to continued
offerii from "Wall Street bears and some of the conv
missinn houses. There, was a rood scattering demand for
covering, however, and later the market firmed up on a
firmer turn In New Orleans, and at one time was about
HSU roints net higher. The close was StJ4 points oft
from the best. Private wires from New Orleans Mid
that mission fa uses were baying there In anticipa
tion of a bullish census report, but stated that this re-
I>ort was likely to show more cotton than, was grinned
during the whole of last eeason. and might consequently
prova l.<-arlsh. There were comparatively few spot ad
vlcea from the Bouth, but It was reported that strict
ral<ld!lr:g sold yesterday at 210 points on January in th«
lof-al market, and the advance In Liverpool would not
ursrue ar.y increase In Southern offerings.
The range, of contract prices in the local market to-day

that laxK* blocks of storage butter were brought here from
Western freest rs There ar« some other lota to coma In
