THE KAISERS SERMON.
V "Us- Majesty Makes a Powerful Plea

I ' An English translation of this sermon, pub
lished in the "Homiletic Review" for July, .shows
i to be a powerful plea for the habit of prayer.
We quote the following passage from this
irnorable sermon of the Kaiser:
• 'God. the Lord, has hung in every heart a
.tying bell. Yet, how often in the sunshine of
tt i it is silent and dumb! But when the storm
"*nd of trouble comes it begins to ring. How
I comrade who had forgotten how to pray
ill clasp his hands once more out there in the
eath struggle! Necessity teaches prayer. So
•X it be here at home. Let the serious days
r hich have come upon us, the storm of war
/hich has broken out, set the prayer bells
'winging again. L' t us pray Vat our fighting
rothers. Not only now and then in a solemn
par; no, no! Let us pray constantly.
[,__ "As our fathers in troublous times set the bells
~ ' «aliag every evening, and at the sound uncov
i re<S their beads and prayed: 'Lord Jesus Christ,
«th us abide, for it is now eventide," so let us
VJ w forget our prayers. Moses held up his
ci it ands until the sun went down, and so Joshua
-e-sr Amalek with the sword. Our fight will not
ended in a day. But let us not allow ocr
1 pads to gr«\v wear}', nor let them sink until
1 ictcry is gained. Let our prayers be a wall of
I jre around our brothers' camp.
1 "The history of the world will some day write
VM the uars of our day. But man only sees what
A* visible to the eye; he can only say what the
jt*£Som cf perorate, the bravery of troops, the
ii r f"shft-pt,ess of weapons have accomplished. Eter
nity trill reveal much more. It will show how
■•i' hidden prayers of the faithful were a mighty
power in these battles, bow the ancient promise
■«■ again fulfilled. 'Call upon Me in the time
of trouble, and I will save thee.' Arid, therefore,
hold fart to prayer. Amen."
