from £1,000.000 to $2,500,000 on the Job, and
that In all bis dealings with the city of New
VY»rk he had never defaulted on a contract.
The testimony of Mr. PeJrce and the vice
president of hi; company, Kmil Diebitsch, an-1
K.niest C. Moore, engineers of long experience,
deepens the impression in the City Hall that

Chamber of Commerce; Charles A. Shaw and

Mr. Peirce in the course of his testimony eald
that after consulting with friends he had te

to complete the work, and he said he was will

He said that John B. McDonald, the subway

Europe before the contract was lot and had
consulted with him about the work. Mr. Mc-
Donald had expressed a wiMn?n-:ss to go in
• ith him.
"How much did you figure your profit would
be?" asked Commissioner lOtcheL
'"Two million to two millions five hundred
thousand dollars," replied Mr. P. irce.
"A profit of 10 per cent on the Ashokan work
as a whole?"
"Yes."
"You did n«t think that a blsr rnovijr!, mar

"Do you remember telling: a representative of

"Was it your intention to perform th<* letter

Tt came out in the investigation that W. .T.
Oliver, the Panama Canal bidder, telegraphed to
Peiree that he would like to get in on the Job
and was told to Eend on some of his engineers 1
to make an investigation. Mr. Russell, of the
''.'liver firm, came on and w^nt with the engi

features it was all ripht.
Commissioner Chad wick took the stand and
identitied the original bids. Vice-President.
DieWtaeb. of the Ptirce company, said that he
had been in charge of matters connected with
»he making of the Ashokan bid. He taid that
be had written to Mr. Pelrco about the tub-
Ject, stating that as the bid was a lartre one and
the money market tight, ne believed that it
would be a good plan to submit a bid at ;i high
fig-jre.
"Who actually fixed the figures of that bid?"
«<-kfcd Commissioner afftfhrt.
"I did," replied th* witness.
' Will you produce the book containing the
figures upon which your bid was based?"
"I believe so."
"I am simply asking you becaut»» If you ill
do bo voluntarily it will do away with the neces
sity of my having to serve you with a subpoena.
Will you produce it?"
-Yes."
"What waa the effect of your convprsation
Mr. Pefree afttr jcu had learned what
