ENGLISH EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH OF THE KEI>LF,MER. OF BROOK
LYN. AND ITS PASTOR. THE REV. S. G. WEISKOTTEN.
CHURCH AND RELIGIOUS NEWS AMD NOTES
BROOKLYN CONGREGATION TO CELEBRATE ITS FIF
TEENTH ANNIVERSARY ON APRIL 18 AND 19.
The English Kvangelic?'. Lutheran Church of
the Redeemer. Bedford avenue and Hewes street,
Brooklyn, will celebrate the fifteenth anniversary
at its organisation on April 18 and 19. On Sunday.
April IS. there will be special services at 10:45 a. m.
and 7:45 p. m. On Monday, April 19. there will be
a meeting In the church auditorium, at which
several short addresses will be delivered by promi
nent speakers. The audience will then adjourn to
the Sunday school room, where refreshments will
be served and a social hour spent by the mem
bers and friends.
During the winter of 1893 a number of men con
nected with various Lutheran churches in Brook
lyn and Manhattan held several private meetings
to discuss the advisability of establishing an Eng
lish Lutheran church in the Eastern District of
Brooklyn.
On Thursday evening, April 19. MM. a public
meeting was held in the chapel of the Roes Street
Presbyterian Church. At this meeting, which was
addressed by the Rev Dr. G. C. F. Krotel. of
New York, it was resolved to organize an English
Lutheran church. The first service was held on
Sunday morning. April 29. in the above named
chape! Regular Sunday cervices were continued
from this time en. this chai-el having been rented
for the year. At the congregation meeting held
on Wednesday evening. May 23, the constitution
was adopted.
The Rev. S. G. Weiskotten, who had established
and built up the Church of the Holy Trinity at
Jamestown. K. V.. was called to the pastorate on
June 57. 1594. and, having accepted the unanimous
call of the newly organized congregation, began
his work in Brooklyn on the first Sunday in Sep
tember. At the meeting of the church council, on
October 2. a committee was anointed to peek and
report on a desirable site for a church building.
After a number of sites had been carefully con
sidered, the Johnson property, at the northeast
comer of Bedford avenue and Hewes street, was
purchased in December. 1834.
Ground was broken for the present beautiful
edifice on October 12. 1&35. and on December S.
XSX, the new church was consecrated. On Easter
morning. April 11, IS3S, Mr. Welskotten called at
tention to the great possibilities of Brooklyn as a
field for the establishment of many more English
Lutheran churches, and appealed to the members
of the congregation to consider this matter. The
next morning the pastor received from one of the
members of the church, Charles A. Schieren, a let
ter offering his personal and financial support to
such a movement. As a result of this the Brook
lyn English Lutheran Missionary Society was or
ganized, consisting of the pastors and delegates
of the Church of the Redeemer, Church of the
Holy Trinity and Christ Church. In the eleven
years of Its existence this society has established
twelve new English Lutheran congregations.
The Church of the Redeemer has been very
prosperous in these fifteen years of its history.
CHURCH CLUBS SERVICE.
Federation to Celebrate at Church of
Holy Communion.
The fourth annual service of the Federation of
Church Clubs will be held in the Church of the
Holy Communion to-morrow at S p. m. It i.- ex
pected that twenty-four clubs will take part in
this service, these clubs representing: a total mem
bership of about three thousand men. Tlie preacher
will be the Rev. Dr. Henry Mottet, and the theme,
•The Victories of Christianity."
The Idea of the Federation of Church Clubs orig
inated in the mind of William A. Hay, a lawyer
of public spirit who had already forwarded many
plans for the general good, lie had, in an article
In "The Outlook." proposed a comprehensive
scheme for the unification of all organizations in
the city of New Ycrk devoted to the social uplift;
a federation of clubs in churches was one branch
cf the scheme he had in mind. When the idea
came up tor realization in the Episcopal Church it
found three centres of sympathy— Grace Chapel,
■where Mr. Hay was doing Settlement work; the
Chapel of the Incarnation, whot-e vicar, the Rev.
George BJller, was deeply Interested, and the
Church of the Holy Communion.
From the first only one man was considered as
the choice of the interested clubs for their presi
dent, the Rev. Dr. Mottet. Meetings, both of com
mittees and clubs, were held in his parish house
and the rectory, and his presence and counsel were
sought wherever other meetings were held. The
Church of the Holy Communion was singularly
centra.!, and the Workingmen's Club of that church
was not only the oldest men's church club in the
city, but the first organized.

MIDLAND HOTEL. MANCHESTER.
THE ASTORIA HOTEL, with RESTAURANT of particular excellence, is under the
same management as the celebrated Savoy and West -End Hotel of Carlsbad, and tho
Hotel Imperial of Nice. The Astoria was opened October, 1007, and contains every
luxury and comfort known in modern hotel construction. The location on the Place de
'Htoile and Champs l : .lysees, facing the Arc de Triomphe. is the finest in Paris. Electric
cars from all parts of Paris to the Hotel make it easy to reach the smartest and
prettiest Restaurant in Paris, and view the constantly changing panorama of the
