to have found abuses, and in the mining depart

as ■agruooa for each nn Institution.
The report •will go minutely Into the details and
the methods of buyins and Belling stocks and

NEW-YORK DAILY TRIBUNE. SUNDAY. APRIL 4. 1909.
L.C.WEIRTELLSOFSALE
Adams Company Xo Longer Share
holder in U. S. Express.
I,evi C. Weir, president of the Adams Express
Company, yesterday confirmed the report that his
compaj y had disposed of Its holdings of United
Statts Express Company 6tock. amounting to ap
proximately ten thousand shares. James C. Forgo,
president of the American Express Company, had
previously confirin»d the report that his company
had sold Its V\m shares of United States Express
stock and that he had resigned from the directorate
of the latter company about March 1. The Btcck
heia by these two companies was purchased at
par. It Is understood, by Frank 11. Platt a direc
tor of th»? United States Express Company and a
son of Thomas C Platt. the president of tha con
cern. Frank IT. Flatt declined to discuss the mat
ter yesterday, and It could not be learned whether
he was acting: for hlmsalf or the United States
Express Company In the transaction.
The report that the nale of th» United Btatea
Express Company etock by tha two rival com
panles was made to forestall any action which
might be taken against them by tha g-overament
under the Sherman anti-trust law, was denied by
Mr. Weir, who eaid that bo far as h'.s company
was concerned It had no particular reason for Bell
lng its stock other than thn.t It had received an
advantageous offer and had decided to accept It.
Ho added that bo still retained his personal hold
lngs of United States Express Company stock, and
that ho had not resigned as a director of that com
pany and had no expectation of doing ro.
Tho Adams and American, express companies
bought the United States Express Company stock In
the open market several years ago, when It was
quoted around S5. The transaction, therefore, net
t< d them a material profit. Tho American Express
Company has not purchased Great Northern or
Union Pacific stock., with the proceeds of the sale.
of Its United States Express stock, as reported,
but has reinvested the money, It Ib said. In three
thousand si ires of Northern Padfta at 140 and
thirty-five hundred shares of Chicago & North
western at 177. It Is understood that the Adama
Express Company haa not yet made a permanent
reinvestment of the money It received from the
sal* of Its stock.
Eugene G. Kremer. counsel for tho Hatt and
Banister committee of stockholders of the United
States Express Company, which has been fighting
for reform in the company, said yesterday that he
was hlgrhly gratified Bt the public acknowlod(?ment
of justice to the committee's claim that these rival
companies hnd no rissrlit to control th«» United States
company. He • led, however, that the rommtttee't
fight to have the affairs of the United States Ex
press Company properly administered had not end
ed "by reason of the alleged transfer of the etocV
of these two rival companies to Frnnk H. Platr,
and that In the end It would win Its fight to bring
about a stockholders' meetinjr.
