advances »pr<> made fast enough to create ex
treme dlsturtMUice in the ranks of the ppecula
tive element that had looked forward to a heavy
break in prices as a consequence of the death
of Mr. Harriman. Union Pacific enjoyed a max
imum improvement of I-** points; the pre
ferred. SU; Southern Pacific, 55 I,*1 ,* point?; New

Steel. S«*. In '.veil Informed quarters lt was re
ported aft^r the close of Thursday's operations
that th» strongest interests in the Street had ai
raaged to support stocks in the event of a dem
onstration against prices, but from the very
fctart of the. market there was no opportunity for
successful operations for the decline, the only
early Eellins coming from holders who were
foolish enough to believe, that the death of Mr.
Harriman would bring about acute trouble in
the financial community These sellers secured,
however, better prices for their stocks than any
one expected. On the advance in the first tiro
hours of DtsSlnem active realizing was reported
without the accompaniment of any important
recession in prices, though in the early after
noon re-action were common, while before the
close further strength developed, with last prices
near the best. The. idea that the advance will
continue for any length of time is not enter
tained In the highest "vTall Street circles, as
money market conditions are expected to work
against bull activity in securities, and a elow
decline to ■ moderately lower range would not
Burprise careful market observera. Talk of
competitive buying in Union Pacific was heard
in the day. and the general character of the ad
vance in the issue suggested something beyond
an extensive covering of short contract?, es
peciaJly as th« total business In th« =tork
amounted to more than 372,000 shares It ia
improbable that new interests could secure con
trol of the Union Pacific company, but it is pos
sible that some of th« Harriman allied propr-r
tiea may be offered to Rock Island or Hawley
penple. Three-quarters of the entire transac
tions In storks, amounting to more than 1,50<V

Mr. Harriman's death may halt for .-» time im
portant developments projected by him in con
nection with many railroads, involving an ex
penditure of upward of $300,000,000. but his Ideas
eventually will be worked out. though there may
be some readjustments In the plans. His chief
projects have reached a stago that insures their
completion. The Southern l'acitlc extension into
Mexloo, of which more than 1,600 miles have
been finished, v. ill not be interrupted, and the
influence exerted by Mr. Harriman upon the
Erie and the Sew York Central will live on. de-
Epite the death of the master mind. Mr. Harri
man saved the Erie from bankruptcy. Through
his help the property Is now In a position whera
it can take care of its own future, and the theory
h'!d In some quarters of the Street that its
shares are a good short saJe for a long pull is
likely to bring loaaes to the operators who put
it into practice. Strong interests are behind
the Brie and all the companies with which Mr.
Harriman was Identified, while whoever is
chosen to succeed him as president of the Union
Pacific wiU have tli.- support of Kuan, Locb &
Ca and tLe National «'lty Rank, who will dictate
the fiscal policy of all the so-called Harriman
companies — policy Instituted by Mr. Harri
man and indorsed by his bankers. The Union
Pacific Railroad is making money for its stock
holders an<] is carnins. including Its income from
investments, at a rate of more than 20'per pent
vn Its common sharea, but the fact that ita in
come is so large need not be banked upon as an
indication of an Immediate Increase in the divi
dend rate, nor need it be assumed that there
will be any special disbursement to owners of
the Stock In any plans that the management of
the company has in mind in connection with a
possible future segregation of asst'tt*. People who
