FIGHTING TUBERCULOSIS
A Million Women Enrolled in
War Against White Plague.
"WJiat women have done' in. the last four
years in the campaign against tuberculosis
is discussed in nn Interesting report issued
yostorday by the National Association for
the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis.
Four yoars a^o, the report states, the
only active women ■workers in the anti
tuberculosis movement were a iittle group
of a.bout thirty women's clubs. Tn-day
BBljflM women under the health department
of the General Federation of Women's
Club? in every state and territory of the
Dotted States are banded together against
this disease and more than two thousand
clubs are taking a special interest in the
crusade. Not less than STiOO.OOO is raised an
nually by them for tuberculosis work. De
cides millions that are secured through
their efforts in state and municipal appro
priations Mrs. Rufus F. Williams is the
chairman of the department that directs
tli is work.
In addition to the work of Uie General
Federation of Women's Clubs, the public
health education committee of tho Ameri
can Medical Association, composed largely
of women physicians, has carried on an
educational campaign of lectures during the
last year, in which thousands have been
reached. The Mother's Congress, the
Young Women's Christian Association and
many unattached clubs bring the number
of women united in the tuberculosis war to
■well over .1 million. There is not a state
tn the Union where some work has not been
done.
Through the activity of women- sanatoria
and hospitals for the treatment of tubercu
losis have been erected; travelling libraries
h»M> hp» 11 circulated; posters, circulars and
other kind.--- of literature have been distrib
uted to tho number of millions of pieces;
thousands of lectures have been given,
laxge sums of money have boon secured,
hundreds of needy cases have been helped;
tuberculosis work has been started in many
communities where no movement had ex
i~t.-<3 and millions at women have learned
the methods of preventing tuberculous.
The work of the women extends, says the
report, from the drawing room of the rich
to the homes of tho poor, and embraces all
. lasses, including the factory girl and the
millionaire. During the coming year a
special campaign of lectures to women will
be carried on in all parts of the Vnited
Btates.
ICE WATER FOUNTAINS BUSY.
The ice water fountains placed by the
Woman Municipal League in various
thirsty sections of the city are doing a
rushing business these day?. Not only do
they quench the thirst of the passing news
boy, the shopgirl, the workingman, the po
liceman and tho pedler. but their waters go
to the homes of the people. Almost any
time one may see around any of the foun
tains a croup of little girls and boys with
palls which they fill and carry carefully
down the crowded streets to the tenement
house, whose water these days is intoler
ably tepid. In such homes there is neither
room nor money for the keeping of ice. and
it I- only in this way that watrr tit to
drink can be obtained for family use.
There aro nineteen of these fountains at
present, most of them at the missions and.
Settlement houses, where a competent per
son takes charge of them. It. is planned to
increase tho number at* rapidly as funds
can be procured, so that, in the rosy-misted
future It may be possible* to get a drink
of water without first having to buy an
ice cream or 10 cents* worth of stamps at a
drug store.
