Call Money Rates l\n. Sterling
Easier.
Business on the Stock Exchange was ;
only a trifle broader yesterday, but the ;
tone of the market Avas very much bet- ;
ter, and at the close nearly the whole list
showed net gains, ranging from sjood j
sized fractions to 2 point?. An excep- j
tfon was Consolidated Gas. which has ;
been about the only issue to make any
consistent advance during the week. j
The stock yesterday sold up to 137%;
which was within a small fraction of its :
hisrh level on Wednesday, but profit tak- ;
ing In the late trading caused It to re- |
act to 196% at the close, a net loss for j
the day of three-eighths of a point.
Readinsj, United States Steel common,
Union Pacific, Lehigta Valley and Amal
gamated Copper supplied by far the
larger part of the total transactions, and
all showed net gains of over a point at
the close. Thy Southern railroad issues
: were also strong, although not very ac
tive, Atlantic Coast : Line gaining 2
■ points, Louisville <fc Nashville I*4 and
Southern Railway preferred I 1 * points
on the day's operations. Canadian Pa
1 cific was another, stock that showed pro
nounced strength yesterday, making a
net gain of 1 points. The advance in
this issue was due to buying on reports
that the management of the company
'had placed large orders for equipment,
and also because of the favorable earn
ing: statement for November. Short
covering was chiefly responsible for the
1 general advance In prices yesterday,
I other factors being the firmness of the
London, market and a fairly good sup
ply of buying orders by foreign houses.
Bearish Influences were not lacking, but
■ apparently had no effect on the market.
unf&vorabij news, such as the tiling of
i government briefs in the tobacco and
j Standard Oil cases and poor earning
j statements by th<> Harriman lines for
I November, going unheeae&.
One of the best features of the day
was the decidedly broader bond market.
The demand for the New York City
iif sues was particularly good and caused
an advance in the price of the 4^s to
within five-eighths of a point of the
S highest level reached thus far this year.
; Railroad bonds of the savings bank class
and other high grade issues were also in
good demand at prices ranging from
one-half to a full point above the quota
tions prevailing two weeks 'ago. The
transactions were nearly double those of
the preceding day and showed that the
usual year end investment buying of
high das* bonds had begun. .Sterling
I exchange was again easier, declining
another ■> points, but call money rates
rose to 9 per cent, the highest since last
; Mr: No uneasiness was felt in broker
age circles over the rise in call money,
however, where It was regarded simply
las reflecting the demand for money in
; -jdf-nt to the end of the year. Time
: funds also showed a hardening tendency
lin sympathy with the rise in call loans,
but the Improvement was slight. The
' Bank of England made no change in its
minimum rate of discount yesterday, but
j fchowed a decline in its proportion of re
serve to liability of more than 8 points
] from the level reported a week ago to
1 ::-■ This, however, was higher than
! recorded for this week last year. The
! ... .d banks also felt the strain of the ap
| proaching yearly settlements, and there
J was Borne rather heavy calling of loans
iby these institutions, which forced a
I general shifting of credits and was the
! principal factor in the advance in call
: money rates.

OUTSIDE SECURITIES.
After a generally dull : and easy opening
the market for outside securities before
mid-day deA-eloped slightly more activity
and a firmer tendency. Considerable
strength was shown in spots on a better
buying movement. This was especially so
in "some of the Industrials. Intercontinental
Rubber was the feature, gaining 1% P' 1 1 " 1 *
with only a slight reaction. Standard Oil
improved a point and American Tobacco 3
points. American Writing Paper. improved
ii. although later the bid was reduced ma
terially. In the mining list there wasafair
inquiry for Inspiration. Chino and British
Columbia. The silver stocks were ateadj .
but quiet. In bonds Western Paaflc us
were slightly lower. American Smelters
Securities 6s and Southern Bell Telephone
and Telegraph. is ruled steady.

CONSOLIDATED EXCHANGE.
Prices were gradually -working upward on
tbft^.onsolidated Stock Exchange, throughout
the day. Generally trading sentiment favor
ed an improvement, and there was evidence
of a revi\-al of commission hou?e interest,
particularly In the case of United States
Steel common. That stock was in con
tinuous demand, with its lowest, price 71 l i,
\i of a point above its opening and low fig
ure on the New York Stock Exchange.
Toward the dose room traders, who had
held off from covering short contracts,
thinking that the market might give be
fore the end of the day, started to huy in.
This was reflected by both Reading and
Vnion Pacific, each of which touched high
quotations a fraction above the top price?
readied on the other board. The metal
stocks exhibited the poorest tone. Amalga
mated Copper early in the day selling down
to 61 1 - and Smelting to 73's, both \i of a
point "under the low figures touched on the
othf>r exchange. Pessimistic talk continued
regarding the state of the copper trade.
Among the stocks dealt in in fractional
lots, which failed to be qaotod on the New
York Stock Exchange, were Corn Products
at 14^ and Third Avenue at 9%. Detailed
