FINANCIAL MARKET
Call Money Touches 7 Per Cent
— Sterling Declines to Low
• est Price of the Year.
Transactions on the Stock Exchange
; on the last full day of the year wet* in
'. a little larger volume than on any pre
ceding- day this week, but the trading
i was still largely professional and. al
i though the movement of prices was
! generally upward, the movement was
| due almost entirely to .short covering.
| In the early trading some of the lead
'• ing issues were quite active and made
I substantial gains, selling up to a new
j high level for the week, Reading being
particularly strong. This stock was
probably helped by reports that the
Lackawanna's earnings fur the year just
i enfling- would amount to about 40 per
I cent on the increased volume of stock
! now outstanding. Union Pacific and
i United State? Steel common also ac"
i vanced sharply in the first hour under
; good demand, and " while most of this
j buying was covering by shorts, there
! were indications that part of it was for
! speculative interests that have taken a
I position on the bull side. Northern Pa
cific advanced half a point on the an
• nouncement of the .declaration of the
regular dividend, showing that there had
: been some expectation that the rumored ,
! reduction in the rate would be made,
i Stocks reacted in the final hour of the
; session, but did not lose all iof their |
: earlier gains, and at the close of the :
' market a majority of the leading issues j
i showed fractional gains over Thursday j
i final figure.". A few, such as Amalga

I than they had gained, however, and]
' sustained nit losses on the day's opera- ;
' (tana ranging from % to 1% points. The ;
biggest line being in Interborough- j
; Metropolitan common.
An advance in call money rates to 7 I
. per cent, the highest since last April. ,
I had the effect of checking business, as ,
! brokers whose loans were called had to i
' seek new accommodation. The rise in j
\ call money had no effect on sentiment, i
i however, and did not cause «ny surprise.
! as it bad been generally expected that,
j there would be heavy calling of loans

j year. The bond market, while not quite j
j ■0 broad as on Thursday, was active and |
' strong, and buying of high class rail- j
1 road and municipal bonds for investment
; account continued in good volume.
' According to the known movement of
j money in die current week the local
' banks have sained approximately
$3,000,000 in cash holdings, the larger
1 pail of the gain resulting from receipts]
|of currency from the Interior. The local

i CONSOLIDATED EXCHANGE.
! Considerable irregularity attended the
dealings on the Consolidated Exchange.
Large pront taking was a feature early in
: the day. a good many buyers of yester
day, both commission house customers and
professional operators, taking advantage
of the higher prices to secure such profits
las had accrued. This selling was in suf
ficient volume to impart relative softness
ai the high st figures, compared with the
market on the New York Stock Exchange.
United States Steel common did not pet
above T', l against a top quotation on the
other beard of 73%; Union Pacific above
171%. against 171%; and Amalgamated Cop
per above 63%. against 63%. The later sell
ing was. much of it, for professional ac
count. Steel did not get under 72^. against
a low of T2% on the other exchange. There
was moderate arbitrages with Philadel
phia in Lehigh Valley, a stock that has
developed into one of the active trading
features of the Consolidated market..
Speculation was on a fairly broad scale,
the list including forty-three different
stocks. A fractional lot of Virginia-Caro
lina Chemical changed hands at 3 *. De
