Tribune Proverb Contestants
ON ACCOUNT of the various version?? to the game proverb,
only slightly diftenng in wording, and which occur on.v in
a few instances in The Tribune'g Book of Proverbs, it has
been decided by the Contes? Department to permit contestants to
cubmit such various constructions of ?such similar versions of the
??ame proverb of slightly iiffereni wording* in conjunction with
j "1""' chosen answer ip<-?n one and the '?amc blank, an'', similar to
I the Following example:
Time a?vi tide wait (tarry) for no man."
Or. for instance :
Make (let u.-- make! hay while the sun shines."
The abec decision will eliminate the LUC o; ex; ta c^,.rnn<;
where a contestan: :~ in doubt as to the exa.u warding, punctua
t'on or ??pelling of such different worded proverbs of the same ver?
sion, and ii ?mil, at the ?ame time, answer a large number of in?
quiries which have been received in regard to same.
Contestants are cautioned, however, not to overstep this pnvi
eqe and use a single coupon for two or more distinct or different
proverb??, as this applies on'y to proverbs of the same meaning with
but slightly different wording. Contestants are requested to read
she rules carefully as well as the answers to queries, which are now
aonearing daily, ?md avoid asking questions that have been already
answered. CONTEST MANAGER.
IT T5 certainly gratifying to rere the daily increase m the rank
and file of The Tnbune*s great armv of proverb contestants
Each dav the Contest Manager is flooded with queries and
requests' for information regarding the methods by which entry
may be made, in fact, the volume o: mail which is dumped into
the Contest Department daily has required an additional force of
clerks to handle it properlv. and it does seem that nearly every
bodv everywhere has joined The Tribune's nopular and entertain
ing proverb competition.
The Contest Manager is in receipt of numerous lefers from
prisons in New York and ?throughout the various sections of the
country who state that they have just learned of The Tribune's
?;re;?* proverb contest and are anxious to enter, but do not know
how or what to do in order to get started. Many people seem to
think that because the first t:v.rtv-one of the series of s xty thrc
"roverb pictures are published that thev will be handicapped and
will not stand a very good chance at the prizes
To these readers the Contest Manager wants to make it plain
thai ANY ONE not a regular emplove of The Tribune MAY
ENTER THE CONTEST AT ANY TIME Tne way to enter
now is simple and easy. Just get a copy of The Tribune's Book of
English Proverbs, the hrst thirty-one proverb pictures, which are
neatly printed with the coupon or answer blanks, and begin to
fig ire out the proverb yen think each picture represents.
Those who enter the contest now have equally as good op?
portunities at winning a prize as those who started at the very
beginning. In fact, the bepnner to-day has a decided advantage
:n that he can get. at a few moments' notice, the hrst thirty-one
proverb pictures in a bunch, which the earlier contestants had to
wail ?'iv from day to day.
However. The Tribune is going to make it easy for non-con
-estants and beginners to get into the competition, and the Con?
test Department will m a very few days publish a SPECIAL
FREE COUPON OFFER which will interest regular contestants
and set 'orth some exception:! eppo-'-mities to thor-e who h.ave
not yet started
WATCH THE TRIBUNE CLOSELY tor thee special of?
fer"? and be ready to take advantage of them.
