StO'k market movements for the week Just ended have been llke the caprices of a maiden?hard lo dcflne. With a proriounccd bearlsh sentimcnt among tradfira and a doubtful tcn dency on the part of comniission house?, it would naturally be assumed that the market was full of vulncrable spots, but various instnnces of bear at tacks have failed to dlscover the thin places, and support was demonstrated by good buying on the several dc cllnes. lnstead of being really weak tho market dl.splayed sfretigth an.l on the whole bag shown a favorablc teoh nlcal position of lmprovcment, Kui ther, at home, by good prospeotlve crops. a broadening of busincss spirlt and enterprise and absorption of labor to the degree of scarcity ln steel and allied intcrosts the market. by all lawg of discounting the future, lt would seem. should exhibit vlrllo activlty and an irreslstil.le tendency to shoot np warcl. That it doesti't betrays a weak ness. and tho effort of the student ls to discovcr the real eause. Some are lncllned to the bellef that the shadow of politir-s. like the sword of DbUDOCMbB, hangs by a slender holding over the market and acts as a damper on bull ish enthusiasm. Hut the expn^'l gentlment of the great llnanclers and industrial klngs largely dlspels the theoretical hypothesls on whlch appre henslve traders base their reasoning. The money prospects form another ob Btacla to a bull movement in the minda c.f some. But not at present or tn tlie near future are there any real pigns euggestlng money trotibles in thls country. Tho inqulry as to the cause or causes of market uncertainty must turn to the question of lnvest ment values and the congested condi ',t1on of tho lnvestment market, not only here but abroad. Ju?t what constl tutes the earnlng power of the dollar to-day is a debatable problem. Ko longer ls the American lnvestor satls fled with 3 or 4 per cent on hls sav ings. Kven though he ?were Inclined to be content, ignoring the attractlons of the hlgher yield securlties coming Into the market, hls domestlc demands are lmperatlve and he is forced to secure a larger lncome on hls lnvestments to supply the lncreaslng needs of family life. The hlgh coet of livlntr ls no longer an Idle byword, but a stcrn factor ln a world of changlng econom lcs, not only affecting commoditles but influencing all branches of commen-e and flnance. It has Invaded the ln? vestment fleld and stagnated the former high.y respectable bondB and other securities of low Interest yields. Followlng; the advance of the tlmes, old systems in all branches of buslness are givlng way to new ideas and in vestments must head the correspond ing inevitable call of the pcrlod. f'on servatlve security Issues of low ylelds are golng through a process of yield readjustment. In the years gone by the securlties, carrylng larger interest requlrements, have been confined mostly to the speculatlve stocks and bonds of doubtful stablllty. There haB been a development of publlc utllitles of the quasl-munlclpal class. especlally gas, electrio and hydro-eloctrlo Ught, heat and power corporatlons, the se? curlties of which have strong fundn mental value and an accretlon of un derlylng security annually, the ratio of lncrease being governed by the growth of population ln each dlstlnct locality. Practically wlthin a decade thls braneh of investments has empha sized a growing popularlty, due to large earnlngs, whlch have been al? most wlthout exception ln well organ lzed corporatlons of thls elass. To these and some of the strong Indus trials lnvestors have been turnlng thelr attentlon, owing to the higher income ylelds and comparatlve safety afforded. If not the chlef reason, a very lmportant one why Engllsh con? sols have decllned ln the scale of mar? ket quotations ls the low yield of these securlties and the lncreaslng de? mand of foreign lnvestors for larger Incomes. The hlgh cost of everythlng is affecting the forelgner as well as the American, though posslbly not ln the same degree. As to the world-wide prospects for commerce and lndustry, they appear to be gradually develop lng to a degree of activlty when the executlve energy of the natlons wlll be occupled ln providlng means for meeting the requlrements of Incrcascd eonsumptlon. The flnanclai situation at home and abroad presents an 1m proved appearance, as evidenced by the weekly bank returns of the leading money centres. The Bank of England, the Bank of Germany and the national banks of the Unlted States all show a betterment. Present crop Indleations are that there will be abundant har vests, whlch wlll Btimulate buslness ln all branches. The troubles of the past are not wholly cllmlnated, but they are fewer than for some time. g WEEKLY OURB TRANSAOTIONS. STOCKS. INDt WntlALI Ha>? lllgli. Law. Last. Cbsa. 400 Anelo-Am Oil. 22". '?J**.
