Market Reflects Foreign Senti?
ment and Cioses Lower.
The dteturbance ln the Balkan ptates,
whfch for several days has had a dls- j
quletln?. effect on the marketa of Eu
roj e, yesterday asBumed a more scrl
oub aapect, and ncwe was cabled that
Turkish troops had invaded BafVlBB
territory nnd that Turkish soldlers had
flred on unoffendlng Servian eubjects.
It is purely a guess as to what extent
securltles in this country will be af
fected should the Balkan war beooinc ;l
confllct lnvolving the peace of Europe.
That Amerlean markets would not be
exempt from some depression would
secm to be an accepted concluslon.
Our securitles during recent years
have been dlstrlbuted qulte extenslve
ly among European lnvestors, and the
selling ln foreign markets of Ame.ican
ahares OB Tuesday, when the war
cloud was gatherlng over the Balkan
penlnsula, gave a warnlng note of
what may be expected should the war
assume the proportlons suggested by
the preparatlons as reported.
Another result whlch mlght r.ffect
our lnvestments unfavorably would be
tilscontinuing ahlpments of gold and
temporarlly at least cmbarrasslng our
meney market. There ls, however, an
j other view to be taken. A war would
i mean provisioning a vast army, whlch
I would make an unusual demand for
our foodstuffe and other supplles.
Amerlcan packlng lnterests would
reap a harveet, and many of our ln
duHlr'ee would exporience a perlod of
prosperity beyond estlmate, continulng
as long aa the armles were kept at the
front For many years the Balkans
have etood Uke a spectre, alarmlng
ever now and then the Europeans and
causing nervous shocka to pass up and
down the spines of the crowned heads.
There haa been an accepted tradltlon
that lf war were to break out ln full
forco in that country the map of Eu?
rope would be rearranged and that the
flnal end would see changed alllance3
and a tearing down of old and estab
Hshlng new emplres.
To what degree such prophecies have.
l?ecn or are to-day warranted la quea
tionable. It would seern that the pow?
ers will eheck the movernent before it
haa reached a polnt menaclng to Euro?
pean peace. From a financial point of
view thls is no tlme for war, and
I money to-day must be carefully con
' sidered ln planning wars.
During the forenoon the market dis
played activity and strength, but ln
! the afternoon a selling movernent be
gan whlch caused reactlona, and a
! generally be.irlsh sentiment was shown
among traders. It was ar^ued that
! signs of a decIininK market were in
I evldence, and there was oc.nsiderable
j ahort selling by the speoulators. The
I London market waa lower and Amerl
cans were heavlly sold, whlch caused
I prices to go to lower levels.
Call money was moderateiy easy ln
this market, and wlth the return af
dlsburaements for divldtnda and Inter?
est there should be no immedtate dltfl
culty regardlng call loans. The time
money market, however, was incllned
to a lirmer tone, due to the posrlMllty
of a checklng of gold lmportations
ahould the Balkan sltuatlon grow more
serious. Toward the closing hour of
the stock market a slight flrmness was
ehown ln the trading tone, but prlcen
on the average were lower than on
Wednesday. Advances were conflned
chiefly to the speoials, but even in thlB
class there were some losses shown.
Beadlng was tho stock most heavily
eold, with UBlta- States Steel a cloae
second. It waa generally thought yes?
terday that the market had developed
a heavy Bhort interest. Comlng events
probably will have much to do with
the market'a trend during the next few
days.
