Active Advance in Early Trad?
ing?Strong Closing.
The calrr. after the Btorm was evi
donced in yesterday's stock market fol
lowlni? the heavy selling of at<>cks on
Wedneaday. Oabie dispatches brought
reuxsuring news from the Balkans, and
instead of an inevltahle war. BO much
dreaded in Europe, the tone of the sltu
ation seemed to denote a probable
tieaceful settlement. European mar
kets respondid to the lmprov.-d out
look, repurchasing Amerlcan secnrl
tles. nnd the trend of trading was
chang-d. The New York stock market
opened strong and active. There waa
an effervescenct- ln the ppirlted ad
vances after th- market broadened lnto
a full, vlgoroua opening and buylng or
ders so decidedly overwhelmed the
offerings. The aharp rise ln atock
cauaed a hurrying of the -horta to
cover their commitments, whlch ma
terlally assiated the supportlng lnter
ests. The lmmediate return of United
States Steel, Readlng and other stand?
ard lBBues to market leadership atlmu
lated a feeling of confidence and cheer
fulness on the bull slde, much to the
dlscomflture of the crowd of pSS-lmlStS
who held sway on Wedneaday after?
noon. Not only was the market bene
flted by the foreign news, but the local
call money market was easler, and
alarm ln that dlrectlon felt in the clos?
ing days of September was much al
layed. For fully an hour the stock
market continued to dlsplay g-reat ac?
tivity, wlth rtBlng prlcea; then the
shorts, havlng been driven to cover
trading. became cor.iparatlvely qulet.
The early afternoon movernent of
Btocks attracted only passlng interest,
but the undertone wae flrm and no re
slstance wsb ahown to any eflforts of
the bears to cause a reactlon. There
seemed to be a tendency to let the mar?
ket conflrm itaelf and adjust operatlons
to the hlgher level condltlons rathef
than overplay the superior posltlon en
joyed.by the bulls ln the return of an
upward tendency. Further reports of
lncreaslng trade development and a
congested condltlon of the steel mllln.
with new ordcrs added dally, together
with continued reports of good crop
condltlons and more rallroads reporting
an Increase in net earnlngs for August.
helped to make yesterday a partlcn
larly attractive one ln Wall Btreet.
The closing quotatlons were Bttflk lently
above Wednesday's prices to be con
vlnclng on the bull slde, and in some of
the issues whlch belong to the high'.y
ppeculative class galns evidcnced the
activity among the supportlng pools.
The returns of the hanks of ^nglnnd
and Franee did not disdope any aerl
ous financial condltlon abroad. Whlle
there waa a loss of reserve shown. con
slderlng the period and the turn of set
tlement dlsbursetnents, any s'.rlngency
whlch mlght otherwlfe result will he
relteved.
At the present tlme polltlcs seems to
have been forgotten in tho atock mar?
ket, and all the news of happenlngs ln
connectlon with candldates and devel
opments of campaign fund exposures
are passlng wlth llttle, lf uny. notlce.
